Don't know if this has been posted before, but I thought I would share just in case.

pretty cool, but maybe not the perfect indicator of a region's voting patterns. Zoom in on Atlanta and check out Coweta county, south of dark blue Fulton county. There are more Democratic donations than Republican ones yet Coweta voted 70% for McCain. Clayton county, just south of Atlanta has more R donations, but in 2008 Obama got 80% of the vote. Weird.

The Republican donating areas that are heavily for Obama are obviously places where all the Democrats are poors who aren't donating.

So downtown Minneapolis has a clear area where the donors are more Republicans. Not that surprising, it'll be interesting to compare the areas where Republican donors live but are still uber-Dem with the gay marriage ban and if it even underperforms Romney, which I'm sure it will in some areas.

This is very interesting, especially at the census block level. It's mainly a map of affluent partisan areas; but in a way, it's the difference between this and voting that is particularly interesting. It's very dramatic in a place like the north side of Milwaukee with poorer minority areas near to affluent liberal areas and very conservative suburbs, but even in a relatively homogeneous place like Madison the more blue-collar Dems on the north and east sides are noticeable for their relative lack of donations.

If you look closely at some of the counties using the individual donor option you see they may be dominated by a single large donor. In Kane Co IL the Dems outpaced the GOP by 1309 K$ to 847 K$. Looking at block groups shows that over half the Dem money came from a single block group. It turns out that 725 K$ was from Bill Foster to his own Congressional campaign. Without that the GOP led in the county.

I wish it showed third parties, I'm curious as to what areas show more support economically for the Greens and Libertarians.

Probably a few rich donors on the Dem side.

A handful of people can skew the donations stats a lot. For example, in Lorain County, Ohio, the Democrats have a substantial edge in donations but a third of it came from the tiny city of Oberlin, home to Oberlin College and only 8,000 people in a county of 300,000.

My favorite fact I've discovered so far is that Allegheny County, Pennsylvania is net Republican in contributions (by quite a lot too) but Butler County is lean Democratic.
