I'll be honest, when it comes to most mainstream FPS games, I'm a true noob. I mostly play strategy games such as the Civ series, the Political Machine, Sid Meier's Railroads, Hearts of Iron, etc. However, I might be making an exception to that rule.

My brother is big-time Brony. The Brony Community, on the side, has other obsessions they usually incorporate into their fascinating fan community. (Thinksome of the Spiderman macros that include MLP) A big part of the community really loves the Portal franchise. Just look up "My Little Portal" on YouTube.

Watching a video of two bronies (well, a brony and a pegasister) playing Portal co-op mode peaked my interest in the game. It seems to be much more cerebral than most games of its class, and should be fun.

Do you all have any advice?

It's good. Get it. Play the first though. It's like 3 hours long and probably ~$5 on Steam right now.

I loved it! The voice acting, especially, is amazing.

As Holmes said, you should probably play the first to be on the safe side, plus it helps with the storyline somewhat.

Portal is awesome. Hell, even if the game itself sucked (which it obviously doesn't), GlaDOS and all would still make it worthwhile.

I should have Steam up in a few days, so that will help. But, is purchasing the original Portal that necessary?

Well, at least it's $5, so it's not that bad.

It isn't that necessary, no. But it's just an excellent 'entrance' to the series, and I just like starting things in chronological order. Plus if you don't like it, you haven't wasted say however many dollars Portal 2 is.

I'm proud of you, son.
Dad, are you space?
Yes. Now we can be a family again.

It's not necessary to enjoy the second one, but you'll get more out of it if you played through the first as the plot references things from the first that you just won't find to be as funny without having played the first.

Also, keep in mind that while the game play is excellent for both games the humor of the plot is what really shines. I thought Portal was the funniest game ever until Portal 2 came out. It's totally worth $5.

Also, you can download Steam for free. It's only 1.5 MB, what the hell are you waiting for? http://store.steampowered.com/about/

I do have some advice.  Don't admit the stuff you talked about in the preceding two paragraphs to the world at large.

Get it; the game is pretty good.

Though, even as a brony, why did you say so much more about that than about the game? Tongue

This. Or Victoria 2 if you prefer handling elections and economies to warfare. Both are really rewarding if you can get past the learning curve.
