OK.  So it's just different propaganda than what mainstream public schools are teaching?

I love it when right-wingers think teaching historical facts that they don't like="propaganda."

You're telling me that you had an unbiased history lesson on stuff like the settlers and the Indians or the Boston Masacre?

Okay, maybe Mike Johnson is a competent parliamentarian.

Or what about the moon landing?  How many history classes actually talk about Luna 2?

Or how often do elementary and Jr. High classes on American history talk about FDR being a great man who got us out of the Great Depression while glossing over the fact that many of his programs were deemed unconstitutional and fail to talk about his Court-packing plan?

If a parent wants to send their child to a school that emphasizes libertarian/conservative economic principles, I have no problem with this, just as I'd have no problem with a parent sending their children to a liberal/socialist emphasizing school.

But to call this propaganda while acting like the American education system actually teaches the "fair truth" is either being a hack or being ignorant of the facts.

Haha, I love this talking point, and expected it.  Not really worth responding to.

Talking point?  You can't honestly have read my past 2 posts and seriously believe that American schools teach an unbiased view of history, do you?

(Also, there should be no comma after the word "point".  I guess the English classes need some help too Wink )

I didn't read the rest of the thread after the post I quoted.  I don't care enough to do so.

In that case, you missed my point entirely.

what flies over everyone's head, and is very instructive as to our self-conception of government, is that public schools are ostensibly under democratic control.  so if there is a problem with the content it is our responsibility.

Such history has a propagandized bent towards the US, yes (as evidenced by your examples), but it isn't like making it even more bent towards the US makes it "fair and balanced".

I wouldn't say this is bending it toward the US.  I guess I'm a bit unclear what the school is doing.  I wouldn't call an emphasis on free market stuff to be "patriotic".

The day beings with students singing 'Proud to be an American' or 'God Bless the USA' or some such thing, and as the superintendent said, "I think there's been so much focus on this push back against capitalism, against Americanism, that people start thinking that everybody feels that way but they don't. I have to reject the whole idea that being American is somewhat controversial." Their classrooms are named after the Founding Fathers, they sing all 4 stanzas of the Star-Spangled Banner, they take citizenship tests, they're called the Patriots, and their open house has themes like "We Love America". It's based on the Core Knowledge program. They wear red, white, and blue uniforms. If their curriculum isn't "USA is the nation of Jesus and is exceptional and better than everyone else", then I've never been to any school.
