Isn't the first time either.

Update: He's been suspended from CNN as well, they apparently found a plagiarized blog post of his.

Can there be a more Serious People offense than plagiarizing The New Yorker?

Calling Zakaria a technocrat is greatly overestimating his abilities.

Not that I mind of course - a two-pronged attack on the public intellectual industry is better than one. If only the industry's managers considered claims of plagiarism not coming within the industry itself.

Zakaria's show on CNN is actually pretty decent, at least from what I've seen of it. I don't really agree with him ideologically, but the show definitely discusses issues at a level far above most other news shows.

Is it wrong to hope for Johann Hari levels of hilariously disturbing behavior to emerge as people dig further?

Ooooh... Can Thomas Friedman or Francis Fukuyama be next.... please.

I've never paid much attention to Zakaria -- can someone explain the appeal of resenting him?

That and furthermore, like the two aforementioned gentlemen, he suffers from the most annoying and debilitating illness in the punditry of the 'respectable' US political pundit - "Serious person syndrome" as described best by the title of this website: http://lookatthisingcentrist.wordpress.com/ (and take out the hyphen)

EDIT: Fixed problems with the link

He has to be pretty pseudoest of pseudos then, if he thought a blog article on the Internet won't be detected as plagiarism.

"Pseudo" is a pretty deep word; he would enjoy being called that. He is a wannabe.

Ok, I know this isn't going to win me any popularity awards, given the piling-on going on with this thread.  I almost never watch Zakaria, and, besides being a bookworm, I've never gotten much from him and don't really care what comes of all this.  But citing him for plagiarism in these cases is, to borrow a recent phrase (lest I get similarly cited) from Justice Sotomayor, "cutting the baloney a little thin."  The stuff he gets and repeats from LePore's essay are almost all dates when states passed gun control laws, as well as repeating quotations that were attributed.  Repeating common knowledge (such as dates that can be easily verified by anyone) is not really stealing someone else's ideas in the sense in which plagiarism is intended to call attention to.  The little piece from Goldberg in 2008 is just a complaint that Zakaria didn't name him as the interviewer; that's not plagiarism, that's just Goldberg being a d*#k.  Granted he should have made reference to his sources, but it's all factual information and not original ideas he is citing.  I think the plagiarism rap here is far too heavy handed.

I hope anvi's right and this turns out not to be a big deal.  I hate to see someone's career face this sort of thing unless the person is an obvious HP. I was pretty disappointed with the whole Jonah Lehrer plagarism/fabrication/whatever controversy, him being one of my favorite science/psychology writers. Meanwhile Zakaria's show, whatever valid criticisms, is still better than 90% of television news.
