Obama and Ryan were too young, Biden was too old and unhealthy, and Romney's a draft-dodger.

Every election from 1948 and on had at least one candidate with service.
Every candidate other than Dewey, Stevenson, Humphrey, Clinton, and Obama had served their country in wartime.

This is more notable then the "lack" of Protestants.

Not really, there are way more people who have not served in the military than who are not Protestants.

You're forgetting that Truman (the 1944 vice presidential candidate) was a WWI veteran.

Right. Well, Wilkie and Landon served too,  though, but did Gardner and Hoovers VP serve?

The minor parties have some candidates with military service: Virgil Goode was in the Army National Guard, and both member's of the Socialist Party USA's ticket served in the military (Presidential candidate Stewart Alexander was in the Air Force Reserve, and Vice Presidential candidate Alejandro Mendoza was a Marine infantryman stationed in Kuwait in the Nineties).

Neither Garner nor Curtis served, altho as a 8-year-old boy, Custis was peripherally involved in an incident between Cheyenne and Kaw warriors.

1988 was the last time that the candidate with the more distinguished military record won, so you could make a case that military service has been close to a liability in presidential candidates over the last two decades. For that matter, Ronald Reagan handily defeated two veterans, and convinced just about everybody that he was the tough guy, and that they were wimps.
It's pretty clear that a military record isn't a big asset on the campaign trail, and hasn't been one for some time.
