I could easily look it up, but I'm trying to go by memory right now.  Was it 1936?  What about closer elections, like this one?  Any ideas?

I know it was 1972 for the Dems, but of course we know that IL and DE are safe once again this time around.

1968 and I have a feeling 2012 will be another.

Hmm, 1968 may well be correct, but I've always considered Nixon's home state to be CA rather than NY.

And it turns out that 1940 was another.  I couldn't remember who Willkie's running mate was or where he was from.

1940, unless you consider Indiana to be Willkie's home state (rather than New York).  Otherwise, 1936.

Isn't Romney's 'home state', Utah?

No, it's Massachusetts, since that's where he was governor and lives now.  He was born and raised in Michigan, though, which is my home state.  But since he lives in Massachusetts, that's technically his home state.

But he has ties to New Hampshire and of course Utah.

It depends.  If you consider New York to be Willkie and Nixon's home state (rather than Indiana and California), then yes.
