it was a step in the right direction, but Canada and Mexico should have simply been absorbed into the United States instead (with the consent of their ppl, of course)

The way this agreement was structured benefited large corporations in that they were allowed to get away with outsourcing jobs, which greatly contributed to the decline of manufacturing and unionization in the upper Midwest. I understand that trade is necessary, but trade agreements should be structured to financially penalize corporations that decide to outsource jobs.

I’m not sure how I would’ve felt at the time. I might’ve opposed it since it was initially Reagan’s idea but with hindsight it was terrible.

The damage done by NAFTA and the failure to mitigate it afterwards through the promised means, is a big part of the reason for the subsequent political realignments.

Yes, but NAFTA is just the floor, America needs far more trade agreements to integrate itself into the world economy and to stop harboring xenophobic sentiments towards other nations.
