I'm a liberal and I will say that this is basically a case of "Gotcha Politics".  Clearly Congressman Akin misspoke.  I'm sure he meant to say something along the lines of "I'm dumb as s***."  But I don't think we should flog him in the public square for a bad turn of the tongue.

We should flog him in the public square for his congressional record.  This is one of the men who co-sponsored a bill to change the definition of rape.  The other was Paul Ryan.

Food for thought.

The Onion has really been tearing Akin a new one, deservedly so:

Yes, because having a child is definitely synonymous with drowning.

Yeah, I don't think the equivalency works here, except with the last bit, which is indeed pretty much what Akin said.

The analogy was rape; not having a child. See the bit about 'you there with the sunglasses you were asking for it.'

It works very well as a rape analogy but not as a pregnancy analogy and it seemed to me as if it was trying to be both at once, particularly in the initial post, before the reblogs.

Some people genuinely do see pregnancy and childbearing as a horrible and unwanted burden, though.  Not exactly the same way as drowning, obviously, but in the same general area of life-changing-for-the-worse experiences.

A lot of young ladies would rather commit suicide by drowning than bear the child of their rapist... but you have to actually give a sh-t about women to understand that.

Fair point. It's a little hard for me to understand that mindset, being from a large Italian/Irish/Jewish family, but definitely a fair point.
