No. Their government is somewhat on the tyrannical side in many respect, but having a violent revolution to install an even more tyrannical government is just plain dumb.

Definitely not. Historically, dictatorial but capitalist governments find it easier to transition to democracy than dictatorial socialist govts (ie, Spain, Portugal, Chile, South Korea, Taiwan, as compared to the former Soviet Union, the Balkans).

But there are no dictatorial socialist governments. Dictatorship and socialism cancel each other out.

Something like the Soviet Union wasn't truly socialist, despite what it called itself.

Actually, I lied. I didn't need to ponder. I was making a sandwich.

Yes, AFCJ. There is no such thing as a left-wing dictatorship.

It appears only me and you voted yes.

But yes, that fascist government needs to be taken out in some way. Either that, or hopefully the Malaysians or Indnoesians do it. Neither one is fond of Singapore. For that matter Brunei's regime needs to be removed as well.

Then I will, Jake.

You know what? One of the funniest things is that TWO[/i] of the worst villains in my book are named Jake. I didn't even know there was a Jake on this website until after I already named the villains in my book Jake (which is not their name in real life).

Singapore really isn't that bad if you're from a western country. In fact, it's apparently a great place to live, according to a friend of my mother's who was deputy ambassador to Singapore from Australia a few year ago.

Plus Australians in particular, and most westerns, get to vote against the ruling party Wink

No.  Isn't Singapore basically denocratic, though authoritarian?

Freedom House gives it a 5 in Political Liberties. It has a basically one-party hegemonic government, similar to Egypt.

My dad told me about his business partner, who was British, living in Singapore. He phoned his relatives in Britain telling them how rotten Singapore's laws are and a few days later he received a phone call from Big Brother telling him to leave if he didn't like Singapore.

They tolerate a lot more personal freedom than we have in America, though they're even worse on the drugs issue, if that's possible.
I wouldn't be in favore of a Marxist revolution there, no.

Stop the Singapore-bashing, already...

Mr. Fay, if I remember correctly, was the American teen who got caned back in '94.  If you're still outraged about that...then you don't know much about Singaporean culture.

The teen severely vandalized a Mercedes Benz.  Serious damage to the car.  Now, here, that may not be such a big deal.  But in Singapore, due to shipping costs and various taxes, an average car costs over $100k (US)...so a Mercedes has got to cost nearly $200k.  A Mercedes, therefore, is a major status symbol in Singapore...you don't cut off a Mercedes in traffic, let alone vandalize it.

So crimes of such a nature are taken quite seriously in Singapore, and he was given the punishment that the law provides.  The fact that he's an American makes no difference...this isn't 19th Century China, there's no extraterritoriality here.  If you think four whacks of the cane is too draconian a punishment, well that's your opinion.  But it's not torture, it's subsequent punishment.  And it's certainly not worth a violent Marxist revolution.

Don't get me wrong, there are serious problems with freedoms in Singapore.  But the popular impression that it is a police state is quite simply wrong.

I'd have to know more about Singapore and the Marxists who wanted to replace them.

Now, if this was Saudi Arabia, I'd say hell yeah.
