It seems odd that the Liberal vote would be above the Conservative vote.

Now this is a very good result, albeit somewhat marred by the comedy turnout. Bell only managed a higher percentage majority once (in 1997).

Awful result for the Tories, bad for the Lib Dems but not quite as bad as might have been expected, excellent for Labour, UKIP and the Peace Party.

'tis a minor tragedy that the Peace Party didn't poll four more votes...

I think they have some local council-level activity in Middlesbrough which they didn't have in Rotherham or Croydon.

one of their cllrs defected to the Greens a few years abo and was reelected last year, Joe Michna, I'm amazed and slightly bemused that he didn't stand in this, given that he stood in the PCC election against party policy, and polled 13%

Middlesbrough did remain an unusually strong Liberal area, throughout the inter war years. The Middlesbrough West constituency was represented by the Liberals from 1918-1945. Middlesbrough East also had Liberal MPs 1923-24 and 1931-1935.

I am not sure the history makes much difference nowadays, but there must still be a few people in the town who are old enough to remember it.

Teesside used to be one of the strongest parts of the country for the Liberal Party, yes.
