We must never forget how poor Col. Custer was so viciously killed by the Pueblo and Athabascan Indians of the Southwest.

I wonder what that official thinks about Susana Martinez's "anchor baby" father.  Bigotry and hate takes you into all kinds of weird places.

That's the joke.

However, he should definitely apologize and/or resign.

If Congress can posthumously promote George Washington to a 5-star general, can it also posthumously demote Custer back to private?

How dare someone disrespect such an amazing goddess as Susana Martinez. First Romney refuses to pick her as his veep, then they fiddle around with the timing of her speech, and now this?

These folks will pay for this when she's the president.

So, its disrespectful to meet up with American Indians?  That means everyone who comes in contact with me is disrespecting Gen. Custer, since I am 3% Potawatomi?  This gets under my skin as there are still a bunch of American Indians of all tribes left in the USA.  The Republicans are seriously trying to torpedo Romney's campaign.

Not really.  He certainly was an aggressive general who took risks, but his Civil War record does not indicate incompetence.  He did have personal reasons to be aggressive in 1876, reasons that might have played into what happened at Little Bighorn, yet there is no reason to believe that affected his choice of tactics.  If the estimates on the size of the Indian encampment there had been accurate, his tactics would likely have won Little Bighorn.

At least this idiot doesn't take the hagiographic 1939 film They Died with Their Boots On as fact.  If he did, he couldn't possibly have condemned someone for meeting with Injuns.

Martinez meeting with the First Nations people is a positive in my book. Why should the memory of an incompetant general matter to a RNC hack when we need build political bridges to defeat Obama.

I don't understand what's wrong with "agreeing to meet" someone. It's like when people got upset because Coulter spoke at the gay Republican thing, it's not the same thing as an endorsement. How dare someone tell someone else who they can meet with.

What an incredibly racist thing to believe. Someone deport this creep back to Europe where he belongs if he can't live with the fact that New Mexico is Indian Country. (Custer has nothing to do with this thread, really.)

http://quickfacts.census.gov/qfd/states/35000.html

Historically, it might've been, and parts still are, but 10.1% is not exactly a Native majority.

That said, obviously it's not disrespectful to Custer to meet with American Indians and in fact it's disrespectful to American Indians to suggest it.

The point of the statement was that Mainstream American politicians should never meet with Native American governments, and that Martinez' doing so just shows her off as a RINO, not anything about Custer.

Indian Country is a standing expression. It does not imply a majority.

It's a larger proportion than any other state except Alaska.
