The cities that are actually considering a bid for 2016:

http://www.politico.com/blogs/charlie-mahtesian/2012/09/gaming-out-the-next-convention-cities-135583.html

Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Nashville, Newark, Phoenix, and Salt Lake City

Would be amusing if Ohio hosted both parties in 2016: Dems in Cleveland and GOP in Columbus.

And add to the above Charlotte (for the GOP this time), Philadelphia, and St. Louis:

I wish you people would quit sending the Republicans here in 2020 or 2024... Send them to the center of the state where they belong.

I say Phoenix for the Dems, Cleveland for the GOP.

So you want the Dems to lose Georgia in 2016? Considering how things went in 2012, I'd have thought you'd want the Dems to hold their convention in a city in a state they're going to lose anyway, such as Salt Lake City.

This is a weird statement. What about Denver in 2008? I don't think the location of the conventions matters very much, but surely if they have any effect, it's a positive effect.

Having a convention in a competitive state is also a pretty new phenomenon, as is the "received wisdom" that you shouldn't repeat cities.

Choosing a place in a Swing State doesn't seem to have been that helpful.

2012
Republicans - Florida - LOST
Democrats . North Carolina - LOST

2008
Republicans - Minnesota - LOST
Democrats - Colorado - WON

25% success is pretty bad...

Not as bad as a sample size of 4.

Edit: If you flip a coin 4 times, there's only a 37.5% chance that heads and tails will come up twice.  So technically a sample size of 4 has a marginally better sucess rate than 25%.

A better measure of the effect of the conventions would be how those states trended

Democrats: Phoenix. C'mon guys, it's high time you seriously put up a fight in Arizona...

Republicans: Pittsburgh. PA might not be up for grabs right now, but it's certainly worth firing up the local GOP.

Why Phoenix for the Dems?  Wouldn't the existence of the Arizona immigration law make such a choice controversial?

Controversy works well -- when it is on one's side.

The whores who take money from johns would have a big money-making week with the whores who have sold out to right-wing special interests if the Republicans held their convention in Las Vegas. Democrats would bring their spouses and keep their marriages intact.
