The Reasonable Taxation Commitment

In recognition of the fact that hardworking Atlasians have a rightful claim to their hard-earned incomes, the Republic of Atlasia shall never set a personal income tax rate, for any tax bracket whatsoever, at higher than fifty percent.

Can an amendment be proposed via initiative? Otherwise the Taxation one is pointless because we already cut the top income tax bracket to 50% and the initiative, if it became federal law, could simply be overturned by passing a budget that is also a federal law.

Yeah, I'm concious of that. I'm mostly just interested in gauging how much support there would be for something like this. It may or may not dictate some future plans I have for my tenure in the senate. It sure would be nice to enshrine a policy like this one in the constitution... I see from the last budget debate that we were dangerously close to some ridiculous tax rates. Wink

As it stands now though, this commitment would not be legally binding.

TBH, I don't really care about passing actual laws by initiative. For me, it's more about making statements about what we want.

And so do I: I sign the "Responsible Taxation Commitment". The government needs to collext taxes, but tax rates above 50% seem hard to justify.

The thread is reopened for new citizen initiatives! The signature requirement has been reduced to 8% or 10, whichever is lower (and 10, for the moment, happens to be lower).

Any initiatives which acquire the requisite number of signatures by May 17 will be placed on the ballot in a May 24 referendum election.

Wait, what happened to the old initiatives? I don't remember seeing them on any ballots...

Unfortunately, the signature requirement before was much higher and we couldn't reach it; hence why I took it upon myself a few months back to campaign for reducing it. We succeeded, finally, and now have a significantly lower requirement that is much easier to hit. We have a solid month and ahalf to gather new ones, too, so we will at last have an initiative election!
