How the hell does McGovern not go up on top. And making Romney more conservative than Goldwater is laughable. The GOP could have nominated Huntsman in '12 and 1/3rd of posters would still list him as the most right-wing nominee ever.

Huntsman was the most conservative candidate, behind Paul, in my opinion.

His gubernatorial tenure was much more right-leaning than Romney's. Then again, that statement would probably be true for almost every Republican governor and hell, maybe 1/3rd of the Democrats.

I would say that Huntsman would be the 2nd/3rd most rightwing nominee ever. Any Republican is "right wing" this year.

I tried this a long time ago. Some of the candidates may change position as I learnt more about american political history, but the big picture is roughly this.

1. George Mcgovern
2. Hubert Humphrey
3. Lyndon Johnson (In term of economics Johnson, Humphrey and McGovern are almost tied)
4. Franklin Roosevelt
5. Harry Truman
6. Adlai Stevenson
7. Walter Mondale
8. Michael Dukakis
9. John Kennedy (despite not being extremely radical, he is still clearly among the New Deal Era progressives)
10. Dwight Eisenhower (neither harmed nor strengthened the welfare state)
11. Richard Nixon (Pretty hard to put him anywhere, since his positions were quite ambiguous. Despite the fact his policies were probably economically more left-wing than Ike's, I'm putting him below since he also contributed to start the conservative movement)
12. Jimmy Carter (clearly more moderate on economics than New Deal democrats, but still more to the left of current ones)
13. Thomas Dewey
14. John Kerry (remain the most progressive democratic candidate in recent cycles, even though it's all relative)
15. Barack Obama (more progressive than Clinton, at least during his eletoral campaign; and at least he managed to pass a health care plan, whatever one can think of it)
16. Gerald Ford (didn't really know where to put him. He was a moderate, but in a time where politics were trending to the right)
17. Al Gore (at least judging from his moderate-hero 2000 campaign)
18. Bill Clinton
19. Barry Goldwater (considered as a hardcore conservative at the time, but compared with current republicans he looks like a RINO)
20. George H. W. Bush
21. Bob Dole
22. John McCain (of course if we had to judge him only by his electoral campaign he would be below Reagan)
23. Ronald Reagan
24. George W. Bush

I find Clinton hard to categorize. He had a very leftist first two years and a much more centrist six years after that.

Bush is actually hard as well for me. Because Bush's platform coming into office was pretty moderate. Compassionate Conservatism, backed with things like NCLB and the Medicare Modernization Act. But when 9/11 hit, his administration starting going bonkers abroad. Though to be quite fair, almost all of America started going bonkers.

Pretty difficult for most of them since they have the same basic ideology.

Apparently he thinks they mean "libertarian" & "authoritarian".
