http://communitypress.cincinnati.com/article/AB/20120903/NEWS010703/309030021/Verona-man-92-shoots-robber-home?odyssey=nav%7Chead

The 92-year-old Boone County farmer walked eight paces to get his loaded .22 caliber rifle from behind the bedroom door. He unwrapped a beige cloth and returned to the living room, sitting in a chair with clear view – and shot – of the basement door, waiting with the gun across his lap.

Some 15 minutes later, when he heard footsteps moving closer up the stairs, he raised the rifle to his eye. The intruder kicked open the door. Jones fixed his aim on the center of the man’s chest and fired a single shot. The Boone County Sheriff later announced the death of the intruder, Lloyd (Adam) Maxwell, 24, of Richmond, Ky.

God bless this veteran. It is a good thing that he was armed and could defend himself against these thugs, and it is a good thing that the law is on the side of the people and not the side of the burglars.

So bizarre that a farmer wouldn't sell out long before age 92.  I will never understand people.

For every story like this, there are way more stories of senseless violence and accidental deaths.

Um, how is this even remotely political? You really believe Democrats are pro-home invasion?

EDIT: Yeah, the more I think about it, this is getting moved to the correct forum.

No, but the point is that home invasions and rapes and muggings and animal attacks, where a gun will save your life/body/money, are rather more common than serial killer-style shootings. (And a gun is useful in the latter scenario too; you just have to be smarter about it.)

If that's "the point", I'm no more educated then before as to why this was on the US General Discussion Forum.

On the other hand, the vast majority of instances where a firearm DEescalates a situation will never make the news.

Their function is to hang around and be constantly useful as a goad. The ultimate aim is not such humane small potatoes as repatriating refugees.

Sure, george, if there's an actual 'issue'. This was a guy defending his home. Who, lieral or conservative, gun owner or not, outside the lunatic fringe, has a problem with that?

Someone can argue than, during those 15 minutes, he could have called the police.

The authorities in the UK are part of the lunatic fringe.  link

This is the most tragic thing to happen in Verona since those two star-crossed lovers killed themselves in a tragic misunderstanding.

For every story like this, there are way more stories of senseless violence and accidental deaths.

If a household has a swimming pool and a firearm, the probability of a child dying in the pool is over a hundred times more likely than dying by the firearm.

If somebody breaks into your house, they're not dropping in to have a cup of tea. Furthermore, the cops cannot be everywhere at all times. These are sad realities, but they are reality. People should be free to choose whether or not to protect themselves in their household.
