I own a couple of ties.....I think they are in my closet, but not sure.  I don't remember the last time I wore one....probably well over a decade.  The last few funerals I went to I just buttoned up a flannel.

I did wear a bow-tie with my rented tux when I got married the last time.

I guess I have about a hundred ties, but I haven't counted them.

I do not have any bow ties.  I don't even think I've ever tied one.  I can think of only four occasions in my life when a bow tie was called for:  11th grade prom, 12th grade prom, my wedding, and a wedding in which I was the Best Man.  In all those occasions the tuxedo rental company provided a little clip-on bow tie.

I have three ties but have not used any of them in years, and might never again.

I've not actually counted them, but I own quite a few ties. Almost all of them are made from wool (the objectively correct material for such things). I don't own any bow ties, but I do (somewhat randomly) have a couple of cravats (not that I've ever worn them for anything other than a joke).

ahem.  I suppose you also still chisel your notes onto stone tablets.  Perhaps you have not met with Marco Polo's wonderful treasures from the east.  One day you will.  Until then, enjoy your wool.

Wool is a good and versatile material (i.e. I'm not writing here of knitted ties, for God's sake). It's also light and very un-corporate-clone-ish. F[inks] Marco Polo.

LOL.  Okay.

I still like the feel of a nice corporate-clone 100% silk tie, particularly those hand woven in lakeside Tuscan villages.  Republican Red especially.  That's the Power Tie.   I tie mine with a monstrously huge Silvio Berlusconi knot.  I think it's known as a "double Windsor", but I call it the Silvio Berlusconi.

Regarding the wool/silk debate.. wool is underrated and silk overrated, certainly, and both do make good necktie materials.

I have a fair number of ties - here in Thailand maybe about ten - and I wear them about once per quarter.  In the US I had far more, from thrift stores, but rarely wore them.

angus, btw, where did a lower class guy like your learn a double Windsor?  I can't do it.

I can even tie my shoes all by myself.

Didn't your folks teach you how to tie a necktie?  I guess you could look it up on the internet.  Back when I was a teenager, there was no internet.  There were books and such.  Some etiquette book that my parents bought me had several ways to tie a necktie.  I always liked the fat knots.

I used to be able to tie a bowline knot in a rope, but I think I forgot how.

I have well over 100 ties and wear one almost every day. I keep a wide variety of styles from conservative neats to funky prints and a few retro styles as well. I frequently wore bow ties in the 70's but now I only wear them with a tux and have four - black, silvery grey, white, and red.

12 regular ties and 17 bow ties.

EDIT: Sorry, I seem time have overstated the amount of ties I own.

I need to finish my primer.

Zero and I see no reason whatsoever why that might change.

(Shirts intended to be wearable with ties, yes.)

Indeed you do!

Just counted, 45 ties, one black silk bow tie. Like Angus, I go with the full Windsor. I think the half Windsor just looks lopsided. I might post a couple of photos of some of my favourite ties next week.

Yeah, they taught me the four-in-hand, because that's all dad ever used.  Vague petite-bourgeois kind of small-town background really.
