1. It'll at least humanize him some more.
2. It'll soften the social conservatism, more like Bush 2000's "compassionate conservative"
3. Gay voters aren't voting 100% for Democrats. It's actually like 75% for Democrats. There is a significant number of log cabin Republicans out there. And with gay voters around 4-8% of the population (maybe more and we don't know it), they can be a small swing group of voters.
4. No downside really. I know a majority of Republicans are opposed to gay marriage, and some to civil unions, but very few are in favor of bullying gay people or avoiding its discussion (Don't say gay bill).

They're already quesy at the prospect of voting for a Mormon governor from Massachusetts. He needs to do something "cool" but apolitical a la Nixon on Laugh-in or Clinton on Arsenio Hall.

Remember that preacher from North Carolina who said we should round up all the gays and corral them so they don't breed and create any new gay folks? I think we tend to underestimate the considerable minority of people who are actually on board with this idea. And a good chunk are probably staunch Republicans.
