Just in case some forget, the Committees are as follows:
Government Oversight Reform Committee
National Security
Judiciary

I'll do the easy one first: I declare for the Government Oversight and Reform Committee membership.

I'll wait on the other item for a day or so to make up my mind.

I know this has only been opened a few hours, but the presence of only four Senators having posted in here is somewhat alarming. Tongue I hope that changes.

If it helps you make up your mind, Yankee, I have absolutely no desire to be PPT.

As for committees, I think I would probably serve just as well for the oversight/reform committee as a guest rather than an actual member. So I guess this post was completely needless!

Competition has never been the calculus determing whether I run again or not. I ran against BK and Bgwah and lost to both of them. The time I voluntarily left was because I was burnt out in January 2011. My primary concern is whether I am up to it and desiring to avoid doing what a certain someone did this past March. Tongue Also if I am selected as PPT again, I don't want to also be a committee chairman.

Oh come on, I think you would make an interesting addition to the Committee. My focus has been a desire to use the committee to harrass gov't officials like the RL one. You could hold down the fort on the "reform" aspect. Provided I get my regular inquisitions, lest I go into withdrawal. Wink

Declarations so far for all the offices:
PPT: 0
GOR: 4 Scott, NC Yankee, NV Townsend, Ben
NS: 3 Ben, Hagrid and NV Townsend
J: 2 Scott and Hagrid

5/10 Senators have declare for a committee. We need atleast three on each.

I'll post my decision on the PPT in a few hours.

Slight correction, we only have 9 Senators. Someone still hasn't sworn in, even after being PMed.

I swore in early... do I need to repeat? Or is this to some one else?

Yours isn't the problem, it would be if you were swearing in as a freshman Senator, but as a second termer (consecutive) that isn't a problem like it was for NVTownsend who swore in with you on that previous Friday, or even Marokai who swore in an hour too early.

This person in question hasn't swore in at all, early or on time.

You can't give 24 hours to elect a PPT. The maxmimum of five days is proscribed in the OSPR. Unless 6 people vote the same way before hand, that can't be prempted.

Now you can demand that everyone vote in the next 24 hours and thus allow it to be finished that soon.

LOL all 10 Senators voted within 24 hours as demanded. Who doesn't meet the 24 hour deadline, the man who set it to begin with. It is always something. Tongue

We still need to do the committees.

Does anyone have any ideas on which preferential voting method we should use and who is best qualified to administer such? I have very limited knowledge of how to administer such a vote.

Shouldn't we just do what we did last time?

That doesn't work when there are more thne three people running. We need a preferential system.

this sh**t, I am tired of waiting. And who knows, next time the forum might not come back on at all. A vote is now open on the committee membership. Please be sure to order or number your preferences on the GOR committee and vote for atleast three members for each. This vote will last for 48 hours. Preferences will be counted according to the IRV method (I will need a volunteer to do this!)

GOR:
[ ] Scott
[ ] NC Yankee
[ ] NVTownsend
[ ] Ben

NS:
[ ] Ben
[ ] Hagrid
[ ] NVTownsend

Justice:
[ ] Scott
[ ] Hagrid
[ ] Marokai Blue

IRV wouldn't work for this, and why not just do it the same way as last time?

Because it was a weak system and we were in a hurry. I don't see why IRV wouldn't work, but I am no expert on these these things. There are four candidates for three positions. The top three finishers win. It is just a question of calculating the preferences.

Whoa Yankee I declared for the national security committee!!!!

I am sorry man, but you declared after the 48 hours had expired. Sad

I did not know the committee votes applied to positions other than those recently vacated by outgoing senators until just now. I will abstain from voting, because I've been largely ignoring whatever talks have been going on leading up to this point and lost my NS seat before even realizing it was being contested.

Both the NS and Judiciary had requirements that they be "selected at the beginning of the Senate". Only the GOR lacked that clause.

Both the NS and Judiciary had requirements that they be "selected at the beginning of the Senate". Only the GOR lacked that clause.

Since the GOR committee's enabling resolution lacked such a requirement, I believe its members would continue to serve for as long as they're in the Senate-  Article 7, Section 3, Clause 3, describes how Senators are elected to a committee once it's established, but it only describes the election of new Senators in the context of a member of the committee resigning from office.

However, a potential workaround here is a selective interpretation of 7.1.3 ("The Senate as whole shall elect it's members to each committee."); if we define "The Senate" in that clause as referring to that specific session of the Senate, rather than just the Senate in general, then GOR Committee elections are definitely still legit here even without any explicit requirement for them.

Except that we (The members of the GOR Commitee) decided that the fair thing to do was to resign from the committee, so there are no current GOR Committee members. Tongue So while correct, it is a purely hypothetical situation. Wink

Also, I'll volunteer to count, want me to just use transferable vote like in the At-Large Senate elections?

If it will get the job done, then sure. Smiley

Any time your ready BK. Smiley

Once you calculate the GOR numbers, I can then certify both them and the other committes and proceed to a mass chairmanship election.
