What I mean is, the minority candidate may lead in a state where the opposite party substantially leads in voter registration, etc.

Two good examples: Scott Brown in MA and McKenna in WA State.

Is there anything that they can really do to avoid the last 10 day "save" by the majority party in which case 80% of the undecided voters just vote for the majority party and that's enough to tilt the race or is basically just hope for the best?

You run against Martha Coakley or Jon Corzine rather than a respectable fellow like Jay Inslee.
