Was the comments over the US embassy attack in Libya the final nail on the Romney campaign?

We've yet to see if this had any polling response.  I'm doubtfull of his comment's impact if only because I personally don't see how this is a big deal.

Seriously. How many times can we read about the Obamachine 3000 pulling ahead of the Reagantronix QLZ in the race for Mars Mutant Colony's 48 electoral votes? Sheesh!

Hardly.....listen, bro, his supporters will not vote for Obama.  Obama's supporters will not vote for Romney....no comment is going to change that.  Forget polling.

It's the great unwashed "undecideds" (what, about 4%) who will decide this race.....and it's hard, if not impossible to judge their feelings on this.

Not sure this needs it's own thread but here goes anyway...

No way of knowing.  We still have the debates.  I mean it ain't good, but Obama could still screw up somewhere and negate some of this.  If the debates are just empty suits spitting talking points back and forth and no one makes any major errors then yeah maybe today will be the day we look back on as the final nail getting driven home.  But that's a big if.

For all the talk about Carter - none of the hostages died on his watch.

When is the last time an American ambassador has been killed in an American embassy anywhere?

Is he finished? Yes, I think so. But that has little to do with his most recent comments. Romney just doesn't seem like a strong candidate to me.

He is not finished of course, but in his attempts to win a news cycle he probably squandered the week.  News coverage for the rest of the week through Sunday morning will probably be covering his response to this incident and the overwhelming majority of coverage (if today is any indication) will be negative.

His campaign is behind at this point, and the last thing he wants to do is waste weeks, especially if it takes the message off the economy while digging a deeper hole for him on the foreign policy front.

No, to the detriment of Republican chances of winning in November.

Romney came across as looking extremely political, not presidential.  While not even remotely as bad as McCain's blunder over the financial crisis, I think this misstep stems from the same problem.  Being behind in the polls but within striking distance caused them both to engage their mouths before putting their brains in gear so that could appear quick and decisive.

No candidate is "finished" until the very last days of campaign.

I have to disagree with you. Yes, this could have been very bad for Obama (and still can be if he flubs handling it) but Romney DID NOT come across as presidential. Smirking on camera while taking a cheap (and untrue, as he knew even while saying it) shot; using the death of an American ambassador to try (and fail) to score political points is about as un-presidential as you can get.

I've never liked Mitt Romney, but I've been no fan of Obama's term as president either. I've been waffling on whether to protest vote or not, but this seals it for me. I'll vote for the lesser evil of Obama, knowing I'll dislike most of what he'll do, solely to keep this thoughtless, incompetent idiot from buying his way into the presidency. Our country has enough problems, it doesn't need to add an incompetent Romney Administration to them.

Such behavior should finish off a candidate, but I don't think it will.

I hope the media makes this point.  I've already seen in the comment section of articles (which sadly do show the thought process of the average American) try to tie this into "Iran hostage all over again, Obama is the new Carter" when the 1979 ambassador death had nothing to do with Iran.  Carter's Ambassador to Iran Bruce Laingen is still alive and well.
