On Proposition 34, which would repeal the death penalty, 30% are certain to vote Yes, 46% are certain to vote No, 23% are not certain how they will vote.

Whites, a majority of pro-life voters, and a majority of voters in Greater Los Angeles and the Central Valley oppose the repeal. Only the Bay Area and liberals support the repeal.

Doesn't surprise me. The state has lots of socially conservative Democrats down south.

California really doesn't deserve it's reputation.  It should be known as the Dumbest State in America, since we...

---Elected a f#cking actor as our governor.
---Banned same-sex marriage twice.
---Rejected marijuana legalization.
---Rejecting the abolition of the death penalty.

Combine that with the fact that we're the birthplace of Scientology and all kinds of other new age crap, and...well...

I can describe the map right now. The death penalty is overturned in all the bay area counties except Solano, in the cannabis zones on the north coast and maybe Monterey County. It loses everywhere else including Los Angeles County. Perhaps Mono, Alpine and some other random mountain county votes to repeal it as well.

An actor and a bodybuilder, then. And both of them won reelection!

Hey, California, I have a question: what's the use of having a death penalty without actually enforcing it?

So this is confirmation of that earlier online poll (https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=157705.0) then?

Would've been nice because the Supreme Court probably won't be touching it anytime soon...

You know that even accepting the questionable premise that capital punishment has anything to do with 'supporting law and order' California's version of this, uh, practice has been under moratorium for years, right?

Can anyone who opposes this explain what good comes from the California capital punishment statute and the millions of dollars it costs a year?

Don't say "justice" because even if you consider execution a valid form of that it's not being used.

Funny how so many of the world's countries, including all of the European Union, have legal systems that work excellently without the barbarity of the death penalty.

They managed to put this phrase in this context ? Wow.

So, bottom line, a majority of pro-lifers are pro-death.

The death penalty in California is basically just redistributing wealth to lawyers, as they spend years appealing executions that will never happen. It's almost unreal how bad of a policy it is.

Obviously it doesn't mean what it sounds like it means. I bet they mostly supported the Iraq war, too.

I just registered to vote today. I'm pretty sure I'm going to vote to repeal, but I'm not 100% decided.

California doesn't have the money to waste on the death penalty. As long as there is an option for life without the possibility of parole, I don't see why anyone wouldn't vote to repeal.

Yes, a vote against repeal is a vote to waste millions of dollars a year on absolutely nothing. That's all the death penalty statute does.

Basically. It's a no brainer. Too bad it's not polling too well. At least the Three Strikes reform is doing decent in the polls. I guess it helps that people like Steve Cooley and Grover Norquist support it.

Which is of course due to a certain other proposition that really belongs on that "dumb state" evidence list.

As ○∙◄☻¥tπ[╪AV┼cVê└  said, it's a no-brainer:

The death penalty wastes millions in a state that doesn't even have the money, and it's not even used.  Not to mention the fact that pretty much every country that claims to at least kinda believe in human rights has abolished it, including Canada.  The idea that the death penalty is a deterrent is farcical.  All that remains in favor of the death penalty is that it makes some sick black-hearted people feel warm and fuzzy on the inside, which isn't enough to warrant giving the state the power to commit homicide.
