Would be amusing, but would still ultimately result in a Romney victory. It'd just be decided by the House instead.

And the hilarious possibility of Romney/Biden, if the Democrats retain a Senate majority.  Grin

Cheesy

I had a feeling this would happen when Ron Paul supporters took over state conventions which selected electors. Paulites should vote for "Romney" in Nevada, knowing that they would actually be voting for one of their own. Too bad he's not polling better in that state.

Mondale has a vague point here; it is plausible that some GOP or another will attempt to find a way to circumvent this like they did with democracy at the RNC.

The electors could possibly be replaced.

The Court has long recognized the right of the state to require electors to pledge, and to remove those who refuse. It's not undemocratic - the opposite, actually.

I'm sorry, but any process that might allow Paulites to become unfaithful electors is not "democracy."

I actually agree. If one elector does so by his own will, it is fine. It happens every other year, it seems. An organized campaign by Paul using this system will ruin his, and even more so Rand's careers. This won't pan out. It won't work.

Intentionally so. The entire point of electors is to prevent it from simply coming down to the popular vote. If they couldn't be unfaithful then they may as well not be around since their state would vote on their behalf instead.

There was no faithless elector in 2008. We need to avoid that boredom now.

What I don't understand is why the Nevada electors aren't all for Paul.

The electoral college isn't democracy anyways.

Ron Paul had his chance... it was called the Republican primary. He didn't win.

Indeed. They just looks like sore losers now. If they want their movement to survive without Paul they need to drop the shenanigans. Winning delegates from state where Paul outright lost the popular vote to Santorum or Romney was outrageous.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Paul win an elector or two from Romney's side after this election, especially if Obama wins.

Perhaps this would to the GOP in favor of dropping the electoral college?

Barring a massive change in the House, it wouldn't matter.  If the rogue electors voted for Ron Paul, the House would elect Romney rather than the Electoral College.

Paulites don't understand that the majority of Republican voters do not support what Ron Paul supports. Even the ones that do that didn't vote for Ron Paul did so because they were uninformed. It is not Mitt Romney's fault that he may have picked up more Paul-type voters simply because those voters were uninformed. If Ron Paul does not win, it's a conspiracy. When in actuality it's just the way things are. Sure, Ron Paul did win Maine, Louisiana, etc. but that was not enough to secure the nomination.

If Democrats win in Iowa and Nevada, no harm can be done there. However, faithless electors could easily vote Paul in guaranteed Romney states like Alaska and Texas (though with the Romney campaign's current state, Texas may not even be a sure thing anymore).

If there is a reason to abolish the electoral college, this is a prime reason.

Thankfully, I think more than half the States have anti-faithless elector laws.
