Today is the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

During the late '30's and early '40's the Nazi regime murdered all kinds of people... Poles, Roma, Trade Unionists, Communists, Homosexuals, the Disabled, Social Democrats, Liberals, Priests, Activists, People who looked at the Gestapo in a funny way, People who didn't get on with their neighbours and were grassed up on by them, members of the Uniate rite... and especially and most painfully, Jews.
Six million Jews were murdered by the Nazis, three million of those were Polish... 90% of Poland's 800 year old Jewish community was wiped out by the Nazis.

What makes what happend even more disturbing is the fact that it was not the work of a few insane extremists just going round shooting people, nor was it the work of a bloodthirsty mob.
It murder planned clinically and coldly. There was a meeting. People made notes. There were detailed and meticulous plans. And then the killing happend on what can only be described as an industrial scale... the victims of the Nazis weren't treated as humans... they weren't even treated as if they were animals. They were treated as if they were... pests... an analogy made disturbingly clear by propaganda films showing the Jews as rats.
What is truely shocking is that people could really think of other people like that.
But they did.

And it is our duty as human beings never to forget what happend in those nightmarish death camps. Not only must we never forget what happend, we must do all we can to stop similer things from ever happen again.
