....will he run in 2016? It would probably be his last realistic chance. There could well be an incumbent Republican President in 2020 and by 2024 he'd been over 70.

He had his shot in 2008, and blew it big time. He won't run in 2016, and if he does, he won't be taken seriously at all. Imagine Lamar Alexander running this time around.

I doubt he runs.

He still lost an election he should have won, which is not good for any presidential candidate's record.

And he has too much competition in the primary. An unsuccessful primary would hurt his chances for reelection in 2018, and it would make it less likely for a Republican President to select him for the cabinet. That might actually be his goal, as a way to become an elder statesman of the party.
