Romney’s wife, Ann, was in attendance, and the candidate spoke of the concern he had for her when her plane had to make an emergency landing Friday en route to Santa Monica because of an electrical  malfunction.

“I appreciate the fact that she is on the ground, safe and sound. And I don’t think she knows just how worried some of us were,” Romney said. “When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous. And she was choking and rubbing her eyes. Fortunately, there was enough oxygen for the pilot and copilot to make a safe landing in Denver. But she’s safe and sound.”

Intelligent people understand and appreciate that Dukakis' response was consistent and morally acceptable; morals, values and standards should be unwavering, regardless of the circumstances.

Only emotional, reactionary hacks would be upset at someone like Dukakis not jumping up and down on the stage in anger like an ape, demanding that a special set of circumstances be created for his loved ones. I'm sure tens of millions of Americans ride airplanes often enough to have experienced a plane fire as Ann Romney has and will appreciate such 'empathy'. Jesus Christ.

The thought of somebody raping and killing your wife should make your stomach churn, and the initial reaction should be "I'd kill the [Inks]." One can feel that, say that, and then talk about believing in justice in the form of imprisonment, not personal vengeance. But Dukakis responded like an emotionless sociopath in his response, which he paid for dearly among the electorate. I agree it was an unfair question, but life is not fair.
