I decided to calculate Florida's 2000 results using the IRV System (as seen on Atlas Fantasy Boards and in Australia) thanks to data from Exit Polls. The results aren't very surprising, but still interesting:

Florida 2000 Results
Bush 48.85% (2,912,790)
Gore 48.84% (2,912,253)
Nader 1.63% (97,488)
Buchanan 0.29% (17,484)
Other 0.39% (23,095)

Others Eliminated
Bush +0.16% (9,768)
Gore +0.18% (10,465)
None +0.05% (2,862)

Buchanan Eliminated
Bush +0.18% (10,549)
Gore +0.06% (3,632)
None +0.05% (3,303)

Nader Eliminated
Gore +0.96% (57,246)
Bush +0.49% (29,219)
None +0.18% (11,023)

Florida 2000 w/IRV
Gore 50.04% (2,983,596)
Bush 49.68% (2,962,326)
None 0.28% (17,188)

Interesting.  Almost as close even with the Nader factor.

I would have expected Gore to won by a bigger margin, but still no surprise.

SF uses IRV for local races.

They only allow you list 3 candidates, which can still be a problem if a lot people run in a race, see this one:

This is Florida in 2000.

Bush would have ended up wnning when a large number of people who voted Nader thought they had Gore second and actually voted for Bush.

We've had Preferential voting for generations, without a SINGLE problem arising from it. As long as ALL candidates are listed in preference, it works.

I'd like IRV for some elections. Just as long as the state decides on its use.  I don't think we should use it nationally.

It's actually a proposition that's going to be on the BC ballot on May 17, the day of the general provincial election here.  I hope we institute it; I think it would be really sweet.
