*If Ernest could tranlsate this into "official language" please*

Official Southeastern Song Initiative

1) The Southeastern Region designates the song, Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd, as its official song to be played at the beginning of every official event

2) The Southeastern Region designates the song, Dixie, as its official song to be played at the beginning of every official event.

3) The official lyrics of Sweet Home Alabama follow:

Big wheels keep on turning
Carry me home to see my kin
Singing songs about the southland
I miss alabamy once again
And I think it’s a sin, yes

Well I heard mister young sing about her
Well, I heard ole neil put her down
Well, I hope neil young will remember
A southern man don’t need him around anyhow

Sweet home alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home alabama
Lord, I’m coming home to you

In birmingham they love the governor
Now we all did what we could do
Now watergate does not bother me
Does your conscience bother you?
Tell the truth

Sweet home alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home alabama
Lord, I’m coming home to you
Here I come alabama

Now muscle shoals has got the swampers
And they’ve been known to pick a song or two
Lord they get me off so much
They pick me up when I’m feeling blue
Now how about you?

Sweet home alabama
Where the skies are so blue
Sweet home alabama
Lord, I’m coming home to you

Sweet home alabama
Oh sweet home baby
Where the skies are so blue
And the governor’s true
Sweet home alabama
Lordy
Lord, I’m coming home to you
Yea, yea montgomery’s got the answer

4) The official lyrics of Dixie follow:

O, I wish I was in the land of cotton
Old times there are not forgotten
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

In Dixie Land where I was born in
Early on one frosty mornin'
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

Chorus:
O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!

Old Missus marry Will, the weaver,
William was a gay deceiver
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

But when he put his arm around her
He smiled as fierce as a forty pounder
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

Chorus:
O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!

His face was sharp as a butcher's cleaver
But that did not seem to grieve her
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.
Old Missus acted the foolish part
And died for a man that broke her heart
Look away! Look away!
Look away! Dixie Land.

Chorus:
O, I wish I was in Dixie!
Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie Land I'll take my stand
To live and die in Dixie
Away, away,
Away down south in Dixie!

What do you think Smiley

I'm against making either song the offical song.  Any song such as Sweet Home Alabama that focuses upon a single state is not appropriate for that purpose.  If we did, we'd soon end up with another nine official songs and that's way too many.

As for Dixie, it has historiic significance, but I'd rather have a song that was a little less controversial that wasn't written by a Yankee minstrel.  Perhaps with some alternate lyrics, I could see using the music of Dixie.  Gen. Pike's lyrics for the song are a bit bombastic. which probably accounts for why they never caught on, even in the midst of war.

Southrons Hear Your Country Call You
Words by Albert Pike

Southrons, hear your country call you!
Up, lest worse than death befall you!
To arms! To arms! To arms! In Dixie!
Lo! all the beacon fires are lighted
Let all hearts be now united!
To arms! To arms! To arms! In Dixie!

CHORUS:
Advance the flag of Dixie!
Hurrah! Hurrah!
For Dixie's Land we take our stand,
And live or die for Dixie!
To arms! To arms!
And conquer peace for Dixie!

Hear the Northern thunders mutter!
Northern flags in South winds flutter!
To arms! To arms! To arms! In Dixie!
Send them back your fierce defiance!
Stamp upon the cursed alliance!
To arms! To arms! To arms! In Dixie!

Fear no danger! Shun no labor!
Lift up rifle, pike, and sabre!
To arms! To arms! To arms! In Dixie!
Shoulder pressing close to shoulder,
Let the odds make each heart bolder!
To arms! To arms! To arms! In Dixie!

How the South's great heart rejoices
At your cannon's ringing voices!
To arms! To arms! To arms! In Dixie!
For faith betrayed and pledges broken,
Wrongs inflicted, insults spoken,
To arms! To arms! To arms! In Dixie!

Strong as lions, swift as eagles,
Back to their kennels hunt these beagles!
To arms! To arms! To arms! In Dixie!
Cut the unequal bond asunder!
Let them hence each other plunder!
To arms! To arms! To arms! In Dixie!

I saw those lyrics, but I thought they were to concerned with war, when I just wanted a good southern song.

Most good anthems have their origins in war.  Even bad ones such as the one written to an old drinking song by Mr. Key.  I agree that Pike's lyrics wouldn't serve, but I can't see using the mistrel lyrics either.  The first verse and the chorus aren't too bad, but given the baggage, I just can'e see using them as the official Southeast Anthem.  I don't have an good alternative either, which is why altho I have several reserve refrendums for adding additional symbols durng a slow ready to go, I don't have one that specifies a Region song.

Green acres is the place for me.
Farm livin' is the life for me.
Land spreadin' out so far and wide.
Keep Manhattan, just give me that countryside.

Nice try, but if possible I'd prefer to have a region song about more than just rural mytholigizing.  We're in the vibrant New South, which while maintaining a healthy respect for history and tradition, ain't mummified in them either.

It is funny, though.

"Where the Orange Blossoms Grow", maybe? I remember, in Florida, preferring that song over "Old Folks at Home" which was/is kinda racist.

Of course, it kind of fits Florida better than say, Tennessee.

SOUTHEAST - THE MUSICAL

In this dirty old region of Atlasia
where the sun refuses to shine
people tell me there is no use in trying
now my girl you so young and so pretty
and one thing I know is true
you'll be pregnant redneck teen before your time is due
see my daddy in bed a drinkin' beer
see his hair it's turning grey
he's been watching football all day

We gotta get out of the Southeast
if it's the last thing we ever do
we gotta get out of the Southeast
girl there's a better life for me and you [in the Pacific]

Which edition?  There are at least eleven of them and the most commony known one includes Virginia which isn't part of our region.  Furthermore, while the Bonnie Blue Flag influenced the design of our flag, it isn't our flag.  Altho adapting that tune would be less controversial than adapting Dixie, I doubt that the aesthetics would be any better for any set of lyrics people here might come up with..

I've been working on adapting The Bonnie Blue Flag.  Here's what I've got so far, but I need another 8 verses to commemorate the states that don't have the good fortune to have Carolina in their name, before I would consider it complete.  However, before I go thru that effort, what do people think of what I've written so far.

We are a band of brothers, and faithful to the soil
Fighting for our liberty, with treasure, blood, and toil,
And when our rights are threatened, the cry goes near and far
Hurrah for the Southeastern Flag that bears the single star

CHORUS:
Hurrah!  Hurrah! O patriots, hurrah!
Hurrah for the Southeastern Flag that bears a single star

As long as Atlasia be faithful to her trust,
Like friends and like bretheren, kind we be and just
But if e’er tyrant treachery attempt our rights to mar
We’ll hoist on high the Southeastern Flag that bears a single star.

Our true and valiant fathers, of every noble creed
Did pledge their sacred honor, to do each needed deed,
So if some scoundrels do try our liberty to bar
Rally around the Southeastern Flag that bears the single star.

Ancient sons of Mecklenburg, threw off the tyrant's coil,
When haughty British lords, set yeoman blood aboil,
Follow proud the example of men with heels of tar,
When flies on high the Southeastern Flag that bears the single star.

The gallant boys who answered to Colonel Moultrie's call
Absorbed the enemies' blast behind palmetto wall.
If the need doth e'er arise, be like Sergeant Jasper,
And raise anew the Southeastern Flag that bears the single star.
