The latest statewide survey conducted jointly by The Institute of Governmental Studies at UC
Berkeley and The Field Poll finds sentiment closely divided on Prop. 34, with 42% of likely voters
intending to vote Yes to repeal the death penalty and 45% voting No to keep the law in place.

The Field poll is historically very good in CA.

Is it cheaper to kill prisoners via death penalty or life in prison? I support whatever is cheaper

Independents support it by a greater margin than Democrats. Even for gay marriage and legalizing Marijuana, Independents were just as liberal as Democrats, if not even more so.

Good news. Nate Silver rated Field the most accurate pollster in the country.

Is it cheaper to kill prisoners via death penalty or life in prison? I support whatever is cheaper

The state budget analyst projected $130 million in savings by eliminating the death penalty.

Lots of socially conservative African-American and Hispanic Democrats.

Hispanics indeed. More against the repeal than Whites according to this poll.
Blacks, no. Not on this issue. (59-22 for abolution according to the poll, and of course DAs tend to assume Blacks are to be excluded from juries in death penalty cases as a matter of course.)

I remember former CA House Speaker Willie Brown talking politics with Dave Attell while shooting pool in a San Fran episode of Insomniac. He said that in CA the Independents tend to be even more liberal than Democrats. Many of them would be Peace and Freedom Party types if forced to choose.

That's per year too: http://ballotpedia.org/wiki/index.php/California_Proposition_34,_the_End_the_Death_Penalty_Initiative_%282012%29#Fiscal_impact

Knowing California's propensity to be on the wrong side of everything, this will probably fail.
