It seems like this should have been a pretty good state for him.  He was from right next door Minnesota and was hugely popular there.  I believe he was even called "Wisconsin's third Senator". 

I also dont get why Nixon carried Wisconsin over Kennedy in 1960.  Wisconsin has a pretty good sized Catholic voting bloc and I would have thought that would have given Kennedy the state.

Any thoughts?

The driftless area wasn't dem leaning back then and the Kastenmeier district, while dem leaning, wasn't enough to offset things. The Fox River Valley back then was even more hardcore GOP then it is today.

Probably the Protestants, especially the German Protestants, voted Republican in strong enough numbers to offset the Catholic numbers in the rest of the state.
