Here's an amendment I'd like to propose. We had this in Kansas, but Indiana doesn't have it, which I have always had a problem with.

I think that should be up to the individual school districts. In my area, we only get 3 days off. Sad

I'm strongly opposed to adding this.

For teachers with a bachelor's degree, would anybody object to bumping the promotions cap to 10?
I am perfectly fine with that.

So you're accepting that amendment as friendly?

Ouch. My reason for introducing this was that in many school districts, Thanksgiving break doesn't begin until Thanksgiving, making it very difficult to travel. I'd be curious in hearing what some of the concerns were with this bill. This has been something that teacher's have fought on for many years, so I do think it has relevance in a discussion on "teaching reform."

It should be left to the school districts to decide.

I know of some which have dealt with this by making it two days before.  My objection is that the amendment would force them to shorten the break and honestly, I'd rather not shorten kids' thanksgiving break unless there's a good reason to do so Tongue  Also, this feels like something that should be up to the school districts even though I agree that it would be better if school districts began thanksgiving at least one day before the holiday.

Oh, well my intention wasn't to shorten the break. If it could garner enough support, I'd be fine with changing "shall" to "must", so that school's can still set it before if they'd like. I've spoken with many teachers throughout our region, and this is a problem many of them have with our current system. A teacher (or student) may have plans to travel to, say, Florida for Thanksgiving, but because of the way many schools set it up, they either have to rush down Wednesday evening or miss a day of school. And a lot of school districts also prohibit teacher's from using it as a personal or sick day, so they have to miss it with no pay.

But "shall" and "must" would mean the same thing...

I'd rather see this added in to this bill, then passed as a stand alone. This is fine bill to include the Governor's amendment.

I'm opposed to the amendment.  This is about teacher pay and performance.  Such a provision has no place in this bill.  It's not about teaching reform; it's about adding a holiday.  The amendment is a deal breaker for me.  It should be left up to the school districts, but if it is passed, it shouldn't be passed under the guise of "teaching reform".

No, this bill is about reforming the teaching system in the Mideast, whether it be how salaries are determined, curriculum requirements (an amendment on that is currently in the works), or holiday. I could understand your reasoning if the bill was titled "Determining Teacher Salary Act of 2012", but it isn't.

Then let's define ALL holidays, not just one.

Voting on the amendment is now closed.  The AYEs are 1, and the NAYs are 2, with 1 ABSTAIN, and 1 not voting.

So, Governor, I'll support the amendment if we define all holidays that should be given off.  So, what should be on the list?
