At least the lies are being spread in public now, instead of via PM. Roll Eyes Stuff like this is why this fish-wrapper will never hold a candle to the Laborinth.

On second thought, I'm not even sure that this makes for a good fish-wrapper: the ink is running off of the pages.

I suppose it is technically true that the Liberals are without a Senate candidate.

Whigs, Liberals Laborites, Federalists find themselves without candidates and leaders

I insist upon an interview to answer these false claims.

Anyway, as I said back in December, I welcome any paper spin or nor spin.

ALL HEADLINES, ALL SPIN, ALL FONTS, ALL THE TIME

LOOKING FOR ANSWERS
AN (ATTEMPTED) FAQ ON THE POWER AND FUEL ACT

Q: Why should we nationalise our energy industry?
Energy is obviously a prerequisite for any economic activity and as such, we should strive to ensure that its costs are at its absolute lowest possible. You simply cannot do that with a private sector model, as the goal of profit will always interfere.

I've already outlined my reasons for supporting this. (1) energy should not be held in private hands and (2) energy should be owned by the public and democratically managed in their interests. There's really not a lot else to say about either one of those. [...] I don't believe in the private ownership of anything.

It sounds to me like the liquor store debates here in Pennsylvania. We have public / state run wine and liquor stores, which do three things: Keep prices stable and affordable, pay reasonably good wages to employees (who actually have a union! - imagine that), and the crucial thing is, they keep money in the system. When you make something public, it feeds itself. Does that make sense? So when I buy my Cabernet Sauvignon, it's going into the state system as opposed to the coffers of some tycoon who bought up the wine store as a side venture and who pays his help as little as he absolutely can get away with (i.e., minimum wage).

I think, as with education and healthcare I come at this from the different perspective of someone who's British.

In the UK, energy is a real problem with about 1 in 10 households suffering from fuel poverty. Anything that can be done to reduce that should be, including reducing costs.

With regard to things like nuclear energy, the plants are simply uneconomic for a private company to run, so they don't. Private firms don't want to run them absent massive subsidies, so either the government pays huge amounts to subsidize private profits or it pays huge amounts to run it itself.

The same is true for things like renewables. Ultimately, unless we want to use fossil fuels, we are forced to pay huge amounts out of the public purse, nationalisation or not.

Also, I can't believe that nationalisation would be that disastrous. Countries like France have nationalised energy without the sky falling in.

Q: Why should energy costs be at the lowest possible price?  What does that do for conservation?
Why should energy costs in part be due to profit when the public sector can simply break even? I imagine that a good chunk of the money saved by consumers will find its way into the economy in other areas. Energy is a job-sparse industry (save for wind and solar); I'd rather people spend what they are currently spending on fuel on retail and the like, since we'd get a better bang for our buck.

If conservation is a legitimate worry, then the amount of available energy could be capped (though that's not my plan here). Labor may be a green party but energy affordability comes first for me personally; ensuring that we derive as much of it as possible from renewable sources should be the goal.

Q: But won't lower energy prices disincentive consumer investments in energy conservation, energy efficiency, and distributed renewable energy generation?
...

Q: Anyway, aren't energy prices already lower than in all but a few countries?
...

Q: How would this bill treat foreign energy companies? Are they barred from doing business in Atlasia?

Q: Is there evidence that energy profits are higher compared to other sectors?
...

Q: How would the Atlasian Energy Authority estimate power consumption?
...

Q: What incentive would the Atlasian Energy Authority or any of its sub-units have to increase efficiency or otherwise reduce production costs?
Well, there's the fact that it's a democratically governed structure, and the people running it have an obvious interest in making costs as low as possible for themselves.

The government can cull resources. Why could the private system improvise and innovate and not a national company? Don't we have access to the same minds, the military, and the same scientists? I sure as hell think so.

Q: How will the Atlasian Energy Authority meet its goal to achieve "a 100% renewable energy economy by 2030"?
Acquiring some of those industries that will be phased out is totally reasonable in this context because their acquisition will still allow us to plan accordingly and gradually phase them out, as well as retool them and put their workforces to work doing the necessary work for the transition. Atlasia is already years ahead of the real life United States on transitioning to a clean energy economy, thanks to legislation produced during President Marokai's term by (then) Senator Nix. [...] The technology for a carbon-neutral economy already exists, and so I think it's totally within the realm of reality and possibility that we could achieve 100 percent carbon neutral power by 2030.

Q: How will the Atlasian Energy Authority meet peak demand with 100% renewable energy generation?
Would it piss you off if I told you that I didn't read anything you wrote? I mean, what are you expecting me to say? I didn't agree with your analysis.

Q: How will the Atlasian Energy Authority's governing boards (composed of 2/3 citizens selected at random and 1/3 union representatives) be insulated from graft and generalised lobbying efforts by the unions?
The unions have a right to lobby just as everyone else would, but the people have the final say, owing to their numbers on the assemblies in question. 'Graft'? Not sure why you assume that unions would want to bribe the assemblies in question when they've already got a voice in said assemblies via the worker representatives and when they can already make their case to the other members of said assemblies. How would that even work? This is just pure anti-union nonsense coming from a noted union-hating right-winger.

Q: How will this affect existing regulations?
If we nationalize, it will be far easier to oversee environmental safety and regulation.

Q: How would the law affect distributed generation? Will the government appropriate the solar panels on my roof?
...

Q: What exactly is a "fuel company", anyway? Would this extend to suppliers of heating oil, but what about jet fuel? Gasoline? Refineries?
...

Q: Wouldn't it cost around $2 trillion to buy up the entire energy sector?
Our GM should whip [Simfan] from here to Shanghai for blatantly throwing out cost estimates not approved by the Game Moderator's office.

Q: How will this affect day-ahead and real-time energy markets?
...

Q: Wouldn't expanding assistance for home heating and weatherproofing aid households in need at a far lower cost?

The Atlasian Post would like to thank those who helped collect information for this report.

Hey, care to talk about that judicial reform bill you just signed that overhauled the court system and was so unconstitutional that the magistrate basically put an injunction against it after which you signed an exec order to cancel the thing you jut signed? Or the calendar you made up when you were GM, if you ever were legally GM, that the Senate made a law to overturn? Even though your record is one of consistently alarming incompetence, I still find your opinions . . . unique.
