U.S. Rep. Allen West (R-FL) reportedly asked his wife to be his "porn star" in a hand-written letter from Iraq in 2003, detailing "non-negotiable" sex acts she was to perform on his return and ordering her to wear only two-piece bathing suits.

Former Palm Beach Post and Radar.com staffer Jose Lambiet published some of the contents of the letter on his South Florida site Gossip Extra, arguing the intimate details are news-worthy because the way the Tea Party Congressman relates to women has become an issue in his reelection race.

Lambiet said he exclusively obtained the letter written to financial advisor Dr. Angela West, whom the former Army Lt. Colonel married in 1989. Among the contents:

    The congressman proceeds tells his wife he expects certain intimate acts upon his return that will be “the standard and it is non-negotiable.”

    ...Then: “Angela, I need to know, are you committed to being my porn star?

    “I do not want to hear ‘no’ or ‘we’ll see about that.’ I want my fantasies to be with you. God has authorized you and you only as my partner for intimacy and that is what I want.”

I'm not sure what the problem is here? It's just a personal letter between him and his wife. He's just flirting with her.

While I shudder at the thought of defending Allen West, of all people, I feel that these quotations would certainly be more reasonable in context. They'd been married for four years and the guy was suddenly half the world away from his wife, it's entirely natural that he'd try to keep their relationship's sexual intimacy alive even if the only available method of communication was this awkward and ham-fisted attempt at snail-mail handwritten sexting. The "porn star" line just sounds to me like typical mid-coitus dirty talk that plenty of healthy couples do, it only seems weird because it's written down. Hell, I know I'd be ashamed to read a transcript of things I've said during sex; West was probably just trying hard there and didn't realize how weird it probably sounded.

Also, the "non-negotiable" line and the bit about the two piece bathing suits sound like they were probably just attempts at flirtateous jokes. Really, I think things like this are going to sound much worse if someone just cherry-picks out a handful of lines to share. The only thing I find truly weird, personally, is the bit about God juxtaposed with sexual desire, but I feel even that's probably not too strange for a devoutly religious married couple (E.g., see Song of Solomon for the Bible's God-approved sexual content!).

But really, I don't think you can assume much about this couple's relationship based on a handful of lines from a letter. I kinda feel bad for them that something that was so obviously intended to be private somehow ends up on the Internet. It's also creepy that a south Florida gossip blogger somehow got his hands on a letter that was written a decade ago, but I suppose that's a different argument entirely.

Ultimately, while I really don't like Allen West at all- he's easily one of the country's worst sitting Congressmen and the very definition of a HP- I don't feel that this scandal is nearly as bad as it seems. And yeah, he's incredibly anti-women, but it's a stretch to relate this letter to his political beliefs.

Now, if you'll excuse me, the fact that I just typed something in support of Rep. West is giving me the overwhelming urge to curl up into the fetal position and shake uncontrollably.  I feel that I might have to donate my savings to Alan Grayson's campaign or something so I can even out my partisan karma.

I have to agree. What goes on in anyone's bedroom is their own business and doesn't reflect at all on their ability to lead or think rationally. So the man has a fetish? If we all had to wear our fetishes as name tags we would discover quite quickly that we are all what society would call "perverted." This is pathetic on the part of the informant. Guys, I am not the biggest fan of West anymore, but for Gods sake, he was away from his wife, he saw some screwed up things, and he had some weird fantasies he wanted to do. It was just an erotic letter. I doubt he went home and forced his wife to do this. Bacon King and Clarence are 100% right.

Hey, man! It's good to see some 'faces' still here from when I used to post.

To sum it all up, firstly I started college and just kind of stopped doing a lot of things. Any chance of coming back was stifled for a while as I had become so disenfranchised during the Obama years as leftist, that I had stopped following politics. But I've grown a bit into my own and feel more now that as a non-Democratic liberal I still have a voice and can still converse about these things without being overwhelmed in frustration. I'm facebook friends with Ray, who I think used to go by Walter-something around here (you know, technically Republican, always a cynic, longtime poster?), and he's been talking politics so much and I just got the bug to keep up again day-to-day with this election. And if I was going to find the fairest, best thought out, most up to date, (and most hilarious) coverage, it simply had to be here.

Phew. That was more of a mouthful than I planned it to be. Anyway...what's the general state of things here? It looks pretty similar, and a lot of old names are still here, but it seems like in general the traffic is down....would you say that's the case?
