Doesn't section 5 violate the soon to be ratified Capital Punishment Abolition Amendment?  Or is it supposed to be the termination of the officer's employment rather than the termination of the officer? Wink

On a fundamental level, I don't like the idea of guns in schools, but I can uderstand the want to have protect schools. Could the same fuction be served if we just allowed tasers? How about providng funds to install metal detectors at all schools? I am still up in the air as to how I would vote on this bill, as is, but I am wondering what others think about my questions.

Man, it would be extremely expensive to install metal detectors. I may support it if I knew it'd work, but just thinking of my high school, I know that if someone wanted to, they could easily get around it.

I agree with Governor Tmthforu94.  Installing metal detectors would be too expensive and is hardly guaranteed to work.  Other than that, I largely share Assemblyman Gass3268's sentiments regarding this bill.

I'm not sure if using a taser exclusively would do more harm than good or vice versa, but it's a decent suggestion. As has been said, we don't have the funds to implement metal detectors that are hardly guaranteed to work.

Tasers can and do kill people.  While it isn't as often as a gun is to kill somebody, a taser is only authorized to be used by police when deadly force would be authorized.  Just something to ponder.

Debate having ended for more than 24 hours, this is brought to a final vote.  Members will vote AYE, NAY, or ABSTAIN.  This will be a 48-hour vote.

Voting is now closed.  The AYEs are 2, and the NAYs are 1, with 1 ABSTAIN, and 1 not voting.  The AYEs have it, and the bill is passed.  The bill is now passed onto the Governor for his signature or veto.
