Walton was talented - Belshazzar's Feast is a genuinely impressive work - but unfortunately he was a total hack, so most of his output was hackwork. And, frankly, not very good hackwork at that.

What little I've heard of Walton here and there has been pretty consistently boring, and I've zero desire to dig deeper.

Yes, most of his output was terrible. He was a hack, alas.
