1820 Election: Clinton vs. Monroe vs. Adams

Eight years have passed since DeWitt Clinton's first election to the Presidency. In that time America has successfully dodged a war with Great Britain and large internal improvements have been made. However, Clinton has become at odds with the Democratic Republicans in Congress as they propose tariff increases, oppose the lowering of military spending, and defend slavery.

While Clinton originally has no intention of running for a third term, when his rival, Senator James Monroe, is nominated, Clinton allows his supporters to lobby for him as an independent candidate in Northern states such as New York and Pennsylvania, much in the way his uncle George Clinton did in 1808. For Vice President, former Vermont Senator and anti-slavery Democratic Republican Stephen Bradley is the likeliest option.

Meanwhile, a movement is afoot among dissatisfied Federalists and New England Democratic Republicans to elect Secretary of State John Quincy Adams, son of the former Vice President, to the highest office in the land.

The United States Presidential Election of 1820
Clinton's surrogates managed to whip up popular support in a number of western states while gaining the support of state senates in the east. However, it was not enough to create a majority. With news circulating that the election would be going to the House of Representatives, electors from Louisiana, Kentucky, and one very important one in North Carolina delivered Clinton a majority of the electoral vote.
