I'd say so. A lot is riding on Joe Biden.

Riden Biden better get his crap together, he's already making himself look like an idiot with the major gaffes.

I would think some debate early in his political career was more important to him in terms of his personal life.

Not as important as the first debate of his re-election campaign in 2020.

Not as important as the first debate of his re-election campaign in 2020.

That would be impressive.  Even Reagan assumed office before his 70th birthday.  Just think:  Reagan was the same age, almost to the day, at the point when he assumed office for his first term as Biden will be on the day of this year's general election.

Anyway, I think the debate will be important for him, but not more important than Borking Bork.  Before Bork, no one had ever been Borked, and now we have a verb for it.  It was all thanks to Joseph Robinette Biden.  I'd imagine that in his own mind, that was the best day of Biden's life.  Especially since he couldn't quite give an encore performance with Clarence Thomas.

I definitely agree that this is a high stakes debate for Biden. He's had a long, active career in the Senate, which led to nearly to the Presidency in 1987 and potentially again in 2016. But he's been pretty much mocked and insulted ever since Obama got into office, known for nothing but his goofy gaffes. What was that, that was said about him-- he's nothing more than a "grin with a body behind it"? He's been reduced to a cartoon. A cartoonish cartoon. This is a man who was in the Senate for 35 years. You don't forget an insult like that, no. Yes, I'd say this is the most important debate in Biden's life, in so far as it has the potential to cap his career, or send it to the ultimate heights. But in any case it's the best chance he has in life to show is stuff on a bigger stage than ever before. So I have some hope that he has something in him that'll look halfway decent, and won't just come off as a bumbling old man who's too old to think straight.

What should be interesting is how much they shoot at or past each other.

Polnut: Agreed. The "noun, verb, 9-11" quip came from one of them.

If Biden "wins" the debate on Thursday, that could shift things back in Obama's favor. Democrats love Biden, especially older Democrats, at least from anecdotal evidence. For the past four years, he's been caricatured as a bumbling old fool. Meanwhile, Paul Ryan is some boy genius. Biden beating that lying Rand-lover could result in the big boost in Democratic enthusiasm that Obama desperately needs right now.

I'm worried that Biden will go too hard and "Be Seen as a Bully" and "Crazy Attack Dog" who is trying to divert or distract from the issues and attack Romney because Obama couldn't do it on his own.

With Biden appearing tougher, stronger, and smarter it can make Obama look worse and weak by comparison.

Granted, Obama already looks weak right now with his debate disaster, but Biden is in a no win situation.  He's got to do the job of attacking Romney that Obama couldn't do.

It just seems kinda silly to attack "Romney or Ryan personally" - the Bain stuff, the 47% stuff, is all peripheral distractions that don't effect regular Americans one bit.

Biden should try to talk about the Issues and the Amazing Successes that the Obama administration has had.  Americans will remember Obama's successes and will vote for Obama based on those successes.

To answer the question actually asked, "No!" Biden had a couple of shots at being elected President. He blew it each time.

Biden has never been a serious contender for the Democratic nomination.

Biden will likely win hearts and minds of older white working class.

The low expectations people have for Biden is exactly why he will win the debate.

Biden could forget his own name, and it won't make too much of a difference.

A few people will be looking at Ryan, but this one is a floor show.
