Next December 11, state of Pará will have a referendum about his split in 3 states: Pará (who covers northeast sector of state), Carajás (who covers southeast region) and Tapajós (west region). A question remains, if referendum will happens to all Pará or only to regions who will be asked if they want emancipation. Federal law says that referendum will be in all-state, but there are controversies that will be solved by Federal Supreme Court. States will receive federal money from beginning, but they have a great potential to grow. Carajás has largest iron ore reserve in world and that includes gold, copper and manganese, and larger cattle farms. Tapajós is very poor, but it will Belo Monte Electrical Power Plant, that is rejected by enviromentalists. Many left-wing people and enviromentalists are saying that division will help only latifundiaries, mining companies and big business.

Supreme Court decided: Referendum will be statewide. This means that split is less likely, because Northeast Pará has majority of votes.

Pará's Split Referendum Opinion Poll (Datafolha: between November 21 and November 24, compared with a poll between November 7 and November 10)
Error margin: 3%
Voting population
Pará (exclusive Carajás and Tapajós): 65.1%
Carajás: 19.7%
Tapajós: 15.2%
Carajás' emancipation:
Yes: 31%(-2)
No: 62%(+4%)
Tapajós' emancipation
Yes: 30%(-3%)
No: 61%(+3%)
Margins between regions are extreme, but Pará's weight defeats referendum from birth.

Yes, because are two separate proposals. There's strategy of mutual support from Carajás and Tapajós, but Pará's weight will be heavy.

The vote was statewide:

In Tapajós' region, referendum failed in East Tapajós. I think that this is because people doesn't like the idea of Santarém being capital city, while in that region, Altamira is the strongest city.

Luckily this creepy referendum failed. We brazilians are tired of more bureaucracies, more state governments and more useless state assemblies. Carajás e Tapajós would spent tax payers money n something that will not worth a penny! Instead of working on the creation of more states, we should be considering the reduction of small municipalities!
