He pleaded guility and I don't see any freedom of speech justification for this.

A jail sentence was possibly an over-reaction though.

Almost as crazy as jailing somebody for something they said.

Was it?  I don't know.  All I know is newspapers don't write the laws, convict people or sentence them.  They are the problem.  Well, I suppose the idiots voting for them are the real problem.

Yeah, it's not as if the reactionary press have any involvement in influencing those sh**tty politicians to create laws to allow this.

"[...]which lead to the not entirely unjustified charge that we simply follow proposals from the Conservatives or the right-wing media, to minimise differences and remove lines of attack against us". ~Home Secretary 2004-2006, Charles Clarke.

This is ridiculous. And people don't believe that the UK is becoming a police state.

What's the point of free speech if you can only express in bounds set by the government?

It sounds like he was offensive and idiotic, but being offensive and idiotic shouldn't mean a jail sentence.  And surely our legal system has better things to do than pursuing such people.

You don't seem to value freedom of speech much.

Freedom of speech does not equal offensive jokes about a possibly murdered young girl.

So what does "freedom of speech" include? Do you not see the contradiction here? Speech is not actually free the way you envision it.

Freedom of speech includes airing your opinion on a variety of topics while respecting the right of other people to hold their own opinions and their fundamental humanity.

I can't give a clear definition what isn't included, but I know what shouldn't be when I see it.

Absolute freedom of speech does not exist in any country. Anyways, really short prison sentences serve no useful purpose.

The ENTIRE FREAKING POINT to Freedom of Speech is to protect unpopular speech from censure by the govt.  If it doesn't do that, it's not Freedom of SpeechTM.

I understand that shouting 'fire' in a crowded theatre is regarded as an unpopular form of speech.

In this case, no lives were threatened, so the comparison is incorrect.

I am only posting this to get the 100,000 post in this subforum, which is on-topic, because I am doing an offensive thing on the internet.

And you should most certainly be imprisoned for it.

So freedom of speech is valid as one threatens you over it?
