I can see the characters just fine, and obviously recognize the script.

That doesn't mean I can read even one single letter off it. (My excuse - I have lived all my life in a city with over 2000 Ethiopian and Eritrean residents.)

Unfortunately, the transliteration software doesn't work backwards.  One of these days though, I'm going to actually learn Amharic. Once I'm fluent in Spanish, French, Arabic, Russian, Portuguese...

Unfortunately, there really isn't a whole lot of resources on the 'net for someone learning Amharic, and I don't know anyone fluent in the language.
