Does it? All I know is that the term was introduced by Richard Dawkins as some sort of cultural equivalent to 'genome', no?

I'm pretty sure he chose it because 'même' sounds like vaguely the same sort of word as 'gene' when (mis)pronounced in English, but I'm not certain.
