I think the tactic here is to push a media narrative that Akin's candidacy is a lost cause in the hopes that it'll lead potential conservative donors to divert their money elsewhere, so the Akin campaign stays low on cash.

I think Akin's chances have dropped considerably since August so it could be the inverse (wanting them to focus attention on a race they won't be winning) though admittedly there are better sinkholes.

I could see this. Nixon is likely to win by a significant margin, and McCaskill is not only a little more conservative than Obama (I'd call her the most liberal of the Blue Dogs) but is a lot more appealing to rural whites in the Ozarks.
