Casino - still cool after all these years. I noticed it was kind of right-wing though. The subtext is that this brutal, violent union run criminal organization is replaced by benevolent corporations financed by "junk bonds" in the 1980s.

Here is something funny: I have always viewed Lion King as conservative.
Scar is a communist who promised food for everyone, yet there ends up being no food. Also, the hyenas, seemed to be representing minorities.

Really, really like that movie, although it's pretty hardcore. Goodfellas I think is his best one. Between Mean Streets, Goodfellas, and Casino you can trace the development of DeNiro's character from wanna-be street punk to serious self-made gangster to uptight mastermind.

One of Pesci's best lines in Casino was when he was at the blackjack table and said, "If you had any heart you'd be out stealing."

As to the end, I didn't read it as right wing. I read it more as a polished, smooth corruption was taking the place of a rough, in-your-face corruption.

The last time I went to the cinema I watched The German Doctor (Wakolda), by Argentinian filmmaker Lucía Puenzo, which is an adaptation of a novel written by Puenzo herself named Wakolda. It's a fiction on Doctor Mengele's stay in Argentina (around 1960) and his strange relation with an Argentinian family -they don't know his true identity, of course- and a girl too small for her age -her doll's name is Wakolda and her father has ability to make pretty dolls- in the way to Bariloche . Disturbing and fascinating, with a careful mise en scène, good performances and beautiful landscapes around Bariloche. Themes by Australian band The Dirty Three are in the soundtrack, which is a bonus point for me.

sounds cool.

Gangster Squad

Literally one of the worst movies I've seen in recent memory.

12 Years a Slave.  McQueen is a very talented director and does brutality/suffering quite well. He toned down his more strident artsy-ness for this one-which was good.

I just watched the trailer and it is bad.  It is a flawed movie- but I can't quite put my finger on why. It is certainly better than the trailer and I think a moving movie. It builds toward the scenes that seem over the top in the trailer. Worth noting that Pitt has a real bit part. Cumberbatch and Fassbender are tow of my favorite actors and were great.

I quite like his movie Hunger- about the H blocks and eventually Sands. However, that movie was a narrative disaster (12years isnt good at this either). If you dont know subject matter and context, it is a confusing mess.  A 15 minute scene between a priest and Sands would make no sense to most people. An extended scene of a warder mopping out slop of cell block wing, is a bit pretentious.

Finally watched Argo all the way through last night. Loved it. Great movie - love "drama thrillers." It opens with the old WB logo to boot. Cheesy

The cast was superb, particularly the supporting cast. The house-guests were spot on. The ladies especially conveyed the body language of terrified, nervous, etc. Affleck was great, and Goodman and Arkin were hams as usual, but they didn't overdo it. "Ar-go eff yourself." Haha. I'm going to be going around saying that and people are going to say, "Huh?"

August: Osage County - Don't believe the reviews, this was an excellent movie.  I went in expecting not to like it that much, but it was excellent (especially Streep and Martindale's performances).  A-

Her: I can't really do this movie justice except to say it was an amazing movie, probably the second best of the year after 12 Years a Slave.  More than worth the price of admission A++

Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom: The stuff about Winnie Mandela and how she became a monster was really good, but the rest of the movie is like a class on how not to make a biopic.  Kinda like how W. was great at depicting George W. Bush's relationship with his Dad from both their perspectives, but sucked at everything else.  C-

The Wolf of Wall Street: I liked it, but I was expecting to love it.  DiCaprio gave a great performance though, as usual.  B+

American Hustle: Great acting, entertaining, excellent dialogue, but not really about anything.  This movie is about 99.99% fiction and Jennifer Lawrence is ridiculously miscast (she looks about 20 years too young for the role and it gets distracting nor can she pull off the accent), but I still liked it. Gravity 3D. I enjoyed the fact that an excellent film could be made in an hour and a half. It seems like a lot of directors are afraid to edit so much to make a tight story.

Finally saw Captain Phillips at a second run theater (though the showing was sold out). This is a rare movie where the intensity only increases, it starts out slow, and even the initial boarding by the pirates isn't all that thrilling, but by the end it's quite intense and thrilling. The pirate leader nominated for Best Supporting Actor (who is actually from here, though not surprising for a Somali-American) did do a great job, I don't know if I'd call it Oscar nomination worthy but very impressive for someone's first ever acting role.

Melancholia (pretty depressing, but that's the whole point Tongue )

Then:
Inside Llewyn Davis (perhaps not the Coens' best work, but still darn good... the familiar mix of comedy and drama and hence pretty entertaining)

And then:
12 Years a Slave (strong Best Picture contender... and if Fassbender wins Best Supporting Actor he'll certainly have earned it, boy is this man intense)

The Wolf of Wall Street

Unusually "juvenile" for a Scorsese movie to say the least. I wouldn't be surprised if it is also considered a pretty polarizing one. It seems he went totally nuts, put a lot of silly humor (including a memorable slapstick-ish scene involving a certain Lamborghini), sex, drug use and cursing in there and turned it up to eleven. The result could be either considered hilarious or ridicilous.

August: Osage County. It was good, but I think a different director would have been.......better.
