300: Rise of an Empire

Had a wonderful time exchanging whispered snark with my date during it.

Akira Kurosawa's Dreams from 1990.

Very surprised that I liked it, and liked it a lot. It's a series of episodes that are not at all related, except that I think you can put them together under an "innocence to experience" trajectory. There are two childhood stories (imagination and wonder), three or four adult episodes (survival), and one or two elderly stories (peace, wisdom, and tranquility).

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Surprisingly good, especially due to the ending that makes it so X-Men: The Last Stand never happened.

The Dirty Dozen, Sunday night on TNT.  (Probably the 50th time I watched it.  Never gets old.)

Edge of Tomorrow

Despite the fact that its premise is not the most original one (basically Starship Troopers meets Groundhog Day), it is a surprisingly decent sci-fi film.

The time-loop concept must have been done a thousand times (no pun intended Tongue ) in science fiction, but this film still manages to tell a compelling story.

Locke

One of the best movies with only one actor and an automobile. Tom Hardy is a treasure.

Is that the All You Need Is Kill adaptation/Americanization?

I'm really surprised how strong the reviews are for this. I personally have no interest in seeing it myself though.

The reviews were also very good for Looper, and I found it to be pretty mediocre.  I'll probably see Edge of Tomorrow next weekend, and have an open mind about it.  But yeah, I can sometimes end up being harsh on movies whose time travel logic is poor, but I'll have to wait and see how Edge of Tomorrow handles that.

None of them use time travel logic that measures up to Hobo Orgy Guy & Blondie though (shameless plug).

Granted, I went into Edge of Tomorrow with relatively low expectations because its plot seemed so "familiar" to me and it could have turned out to be a dumb action movie.

But those expectations were certainly exceeded. It had drama, it had humour (without making the film too silly IMO), it had character development, Tom Cruise's and Emily Blunt's performances were pretty decent, and the time-loop aspect didn't become too tedious because they often fast-forwarded to the parts of the loops were the relevant stuff occured.

I also don't think the movie's time-travel logic is as complex as Looper's, because there's only the premise that there is a reset-button for time. But maybe you best find it out for yourself.

OK, yeah, I just watched "Edge of Tomorrow".  Not a bad movie, though the movie it reminded me of most was actually "Source Code", and I liked that one better.

X-Men: Days of Future Past

Best film I've seen so far this year (this will most likely change by the end of the year when the Oscar films come out).

The Sum of All Fears

It was pretty good, but it's still not my favorite Jack Ryan film (Clear and Present Danger is the best one by far).

Kick-Ass

What the f*** did I just see??

I don't even know whether I would describe it as a good or bad movie, because it kind of transcends beyond those categories.
