If Al Gore won Florida, and thus the election in 2000, would all the talk throughout the primary and election season of the Democrats can't win the South turn into "The Republicans can't win the Northeast"?

There's no question that a plurality of the voters going to the polls in Florida  intended to vote for Al Gore.

Probably. And it would be a good thing because I'm sick of hearing about how "the Democrats have lost the South".

Nah, they unfortunately won NH in 2000, so the map isn't perfect enough to support that claim.

And Gore would have won FL by a few thousand votes. What's your point?

In the last four Presidential elections the Dems have won several southern states, the GOP has won a state in the northeast ONCE in the last 4 elections.   The Dems problems in the South is actually not as bad as the GOP's problems in the northeast

Clinton averaged about 2-3 southern states out of about 10 total. Gore won no states down there while Kerry did the same. Out of the old south; Alabama, Mississippi, South Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, and North Carolina, only Georgia went Clinton's way(once). I don't consider Tenessee, Louisiana, or Arkansas quite in a class with these 6 although they are all currently solid Republican states. Democrats more than have their problems there, in my opinion.

Hmmm...

The United Northeast (Maine to Maryland) is worth a grand total of 117 EV's.

The Solid South (the CSA) is worth 153 EV's.  Throw in KY/MO/WV, and you've got 177.

Now, who has the better deal here?

Realistically the Republicans are just as dead on the West Coast as they are in the Northeast.  Overall the state's leanings are almost precisely what we see in the 2004 election - 286 to 251.  The South is a component of that, but there is no reason for the Democrats to focus on a region that is so extreme compared to the rest of the country.

I think the reason so much fuss is made over the South and suchlike backward places is the claim traditionalists like to make that the Heartland is the 'Real America'.  Nonsense of course.

true.

if spoiled ballots could be counted, it would have probably been enough to put gore over the top.

and the legal voters who were wrongfully turned away from voting due to flawed (and racist) 'felon lists' would have added even more to gore's totals if they would have been allowed to vote.

be that as it may, we can only count the ballots that were correctly cast...and bush won.
