You know, it's nice they have the decency to let out their inner crazy before the election.  Too many bottle it up until it's time to unleash it all on legislation.

This is why I feel that social conservatism is currently going through its death throes. All of the fringiest of fringes (Todd Akin, Dick Mourdock) are going around making statements like this. And we all see how appallingly out of touch they are with anyone but their out of wack ideas and lose in places they should win, and eventually, the GOP will get this wake-up call and move more towards the center on social issues.

What's so very strange about it is that it is such a proven vote loser; surely someone has pointed this out to these morons? Isn't that what campaign consultants and so on are for? In theory? Even if only to justify their wages.

Presumably not everyone, including all politicians, assume positions based on what's politically expedient.

Ah, the noble position of trivialising rape.

I think you're imagining things. Other than Akin maybe, I'm not seeing that, certainly not on here.

Oh, and obligatory comment about trivializing killing your child.

Obligatory comment about inflammatory fundamentalist hyperbole.
obligatory comment about how many people here don't understand either of those words.

I'm not sure a single person's views on abortion have been changed by a debate on the issue over the last 20 years. That said, the one question every person who describes themselves as pro-life should be asked, and should answer at least to themselves, is "If a woman has an abortion, how many years in prison should she serve?"

"What if the pregnancy was caused by rape or incest?"

It's telling how few people when pressed truly want to inflict actual incarceration on a young woman for having an abortion. To most, being pro-life is about the revulsion and outrage at the loss of unborn life. And that's fair. But few cross the line to make want outright criminal sanctions, and are startled at the realization that, push comes to shove, they too fundamentally support abortion being legal.
