Oh joy, now it's far right versus far left. This can't end well.

I've always backed the Nepali Congress Party...one of my fellow grad students back in 1998-99 had a brother who was a deputy of the NCP. I wonder how they've fared since 2001.

And to give a shout out to Stratfor, they predicted this since two days after the planned assassination and coup competely unforeseen murder spree by a lone royal which had no ties to the current ruling family at all. They also said the king set up the parliament to fail by withholding the use of the military in the war against the Maoists but still charging them with defeating them.

Once again you illustrating you ignorance of history, jFRAUD.  In Nepal, the Maoists are actually in control of some (much?, most?) of the rural areas.  That's more than a bit different that what, at worst, was basically a terrorist act.

Yes, jFRAUD, I'm familiar with, enough to know that you cannot equate the Reichstag fire, which may or may not be attributed to a Dutch Communist, is not the same as a group controlling reasonably large parts of a county.  It's like comparing the Reichstag fire to the invasion of Maryland by Lee and the CSA in 1862.

alright, let's imagine if the president of Colombia or the Phillipines decided that since they're fighting a Communist rebellion as well they're going to dismiss parliment and their whole cabinet, and basically declare themselves dictator. I doubt anyone here would love that.

Yet at least the president of Colombia and the Phillipines are ELECTED. This guy has basically taken Nepal back to the 18th century and made it an absolute monarchy, and for some reason people defend him.

A king is not a president. The king owns the country. The people are not stupid neither, they know absolute monarchies are better for their interests, so they ususally support this moves. remember Hans-Adam II.

Not under any system of government that any sane man could stomach and not join an illegal maoist group in opposition against.

An absolute monarchy is a better system than democracy, and for several reasons:
1) Limite entry upon governance. More especifically, entry is limited to the King and his heirs. That measn the people know who their enemy is and are prepared to stay put to defend their property against unreasonable taxation.- thus, during absolute monarchies, taxes neve rose above 8%, and in most cases they never consumed more than 5% of incomes;
2) As Ettiené de la Boetie pointed out, it is easier to fight one tyrant than one million tyrants. An abusive  king can be easily overthrow with the support of the population, but it is extremely difficult to ovethrow an opressive majority without replacing it with something worst.
3)A king owns the country and will leave it to his heirs, so he is concerned with long term maximization of wealth, while democratic rulers are only concerned with keeping their jobs, since they don't own the country, so they will only push for short term benefits.

So you'd have no problem with a socialist king you couldn't vote out of office?

*sigh* First, a king wouldn't be interested in socialism since he is concerned with long term maximization of wealth, and socialism isn't exactly good for that. And second, bad kings are incredibly easy to overthrow, just look through history.

well in this case if the bad king gets overthrown we get a communist government in his place. I don't think you'd want that.

That's idiotic. Why would a communist movement want to overthrow a socialist king?
And anywaysm if you look at history, you'll find that kings in the maojrity of cases were replaced by saner members of the family.

I'm not talking about a socialist king, I'm talking about the guy in question. If he's taken out, the communists take over.

Wow!  We have a conundrum!  What are our choices?  Let's see... despotic king or Maoist pinkos.

Why don't we just let the U.N. debate the issue for the next 50 years or so before coming to absolutely no conclusion whatsoever.   By that time both the king and the commies will be long dead.

I hear the telephone network across the country has been closed down by the government.
"Take Nepal back to the 18th century" seems to be to be taken quite literally. Although I'm wondering about mobiles. I know there's lots of mobile phones in India - India has the cheapest mobile phone rates in the world.
