Well, where else is he supposed to spend his money? He has too much. There are no markets left for him to buy in OH, VA, CO etc and he still has millions left over

Won't do anything. Mitt Romney has lost the election.

He should probably focus on the MN markets that overlap with parts of Iowa and Wisconsin.

It's 90% minnesota and 10% Iowa.

Smart move on Romney's part, although he is clearly going to win the election without Minnesota.

Both candidates are already up in the Rochester, MN-Mason City, IA TV market that's 90/10.  This has to be a move into the Minneapolis TV market, which covers much of the state, or it's meaningless.  Even a Duluth TV buy wouldn't necessarily be Minnesota-centric since it would reach northwestern Wisconsin.  I'm actually surprised neither candidate has been on in Duluth yet, per the Washington Post's website.

Yeah, this was why I always thought Romney's strategy of waiting until the end and then unleashing was a horrible idea. While you can have nearly unlimited resources, you're going to end up facing limited space to use those resources. Eventually you run out of space to air ads. You'd think someone with business smarts would've understood that, but I guess not..

This is kind of like the Bush 2000 strategy to shift resources to a state they KNOW they can't win, to create the media narrative that they're SO FAR AHEAD, they can afford to extend the map...

It's an old trick...

Yeah, but it only takes a quick glance at the entire map for someone to immediately say, "Wait, no he isn't."

Rumor has it he is going to air 30 minute infomercials like Obama did. Not sure where or when.

Oh, remember when they sent Cheney to Hawaii in 2004... considering Romney's actual momentum has slowed and in fact started to go in the other direction in some places, it only makes sense to create some fake ones that the LIV will actually buy.

There are plenty of Minnesota TV markets that stretch into Wisconsin:

If by plenty you mean two - Minneapolis (7 counties) and Duluth (5 counties).  Unless there were ad buys since the Washington Post last updated, neither candidate is up in either market right now.  If you're running out of places to advertise, adding both would make sense even if you're not making a direct play at Minnesota.

Well there's La Crosse-Eau Claire too, but I guess that's technically a Wisconsin market stretching into Minnesota.

True, I'm guessing both sides are running ads in parts of safe states like Nebraska, California, Maryland, and Kentucky. Some states are more expensive than you'd think, for example New Hampshire because of the Boston market.

True.  It extends into 2 Minnesota counties.  The candidates are both up in the market already.

We'll really know if Romney's making a serious play for Minnesota if he starts advertising in Mankato or Fargo, which don't reach Iowa or Wisconsin.

Not really.

Some of the polling was showing MN closing.  When Romney goes on the air there, even if the commercials are aimed at IA, they will be seen in MN.  Obama has to counter in MN.  That actually could explain Obama's activities in PA.

PA is much more about GOTV than anything else.

I maintain this is as MUCH about building an inevitability narrative than maximising media market exposure.

Bush spent millions in California in 2000. Gore spent nothing. Who won that traditional swing state?
