The voter suppression bill is almost here!

^^ Also I don't think that bit about Oregon and Washington mailing a ballot to every eligible voter is right. They probably meant to every registered voter. In Oregon the envelope containing the ballot has your unique voter ID number from the statewide election database printed on it so I don't see how they'd mail one to people who are eligible but not currently registered to vote.

What's the chance Gessler loses the Secretary of State race next year? PPP just released a recent Colorado poll today and he had negative approvals with low name-recognition/opinion: http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/2011/PPP_Release_CO_417.pdf

Yeah it's that annoying false equivalency that says Colorado expanding voting access by adopting election-day registration is the same as Montana Republicans reducing voting access by abolishing election-day registration for the second time[1].

"Both sides are changing the laws in different directions so they're both up to no good."

We can't possibly analyze the merits behind the change.

Recalls!

You can't kick every barking dog, but perhaps you can kick some of them.

Why is it unsurprising Krazen would post with glee about kicking dogs?

Well Hickenloopers disapprovals have doubled and Beauprez is within 7 without half the state knowing who he is and the rest remembering him only as "Both Ways Bob" we are actually in much better shape than I that. I think he's the only one who can win state wide and its an uphill battle.

Gessler doesn't look in as bad a position as some of these posts have been saying but maybe it's the opponent? (I have no idea who CO Democrats are beyond the elected ones)

Those are some pretty good numbers for same-sex marriage too. I wonder if there will be a push for that 2014 legalization ballot measure after all? They're probably waiting for how SCOTUS rules on Prop 8/DOMA in June.

Pretty sure Hickenlooper is going to sign the bill and that its provisions will take effect before the 2014 general election. Colorado is definitely on track to become the third postal voting state.

In-state tuition for undocumented college students, expanded background checks, civil unions (not quite moderate hero since there's a state constitutional ban on gay marriage), Medicaid expansion, same-day registration, etc. Pretty good legislative session for Democrats. It will be impressive if they hold both houses of the state legislature in 2014 (which looks fairly likely [1]).

It all looks like a big shift for the state compared to 10 years ago too.

Hope Gessler goes down next.

Tim Foster, President of Colorado Mesa University is considering. He was a big republican icon in the 90s in the legislature. I watched a video of him speaking on education online, he's a decent speaker, but clearly Colorado Mesa is underwhelming academically when the greatest recent innovation at the campus is the use of clickers so faculty can see where students are in real time...welcome to 10 years ago...

Basically no one is interested in running against Udall and there's a lot of quiet chatter for less known candidates against Hickenlooper.

State Sen. Randy Baumgardner, R-Hot Sulphur Springs (rural Colorado would love this)
Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler (1 year on the job and has the Holmes case)
State Rep. Owen Hill, R-Colorado Springs (very young in office 1 year)
former Senate Minority Leader Mike Kopp (resigned when his wife died)

And AG we may have a three way race.
Cynthia Coffman (the number 2 now) and Mike Coffman's wife is already in.
House Minority Leader Mark Waller just announced (give fight next week for his replacement between Libby Szabo and Brian Delgrosso)
And Ken Buck may get in after all (everyone was waiting for him in the first place and then he got cancer but now he's cancer free granted he's also in remission). Still he's making the rounds and looking good

The bigger the selection, the better chance Hickenlooper gets his rear kicked out. Can't stand the guy anymore, he's such a jelly fish and out of touch with Colorado voters.

update

Owen HIll looking at udall not hickenlooper and Ken Buck is flirting with the bid against Udall. Honestly that's not a bad idea. He's been vetted, there's nothing more to come up with on Ken, he's learned from his mistakes and he's well established. He still probably has no shot.

Its not like the phone recording is any less real then it was in 2010. And as along as that is floating around, Buck will never get the time of day from the soccer moms in Jefferson County.

Sounds like voters who don't think the same way you do so you portray them in the most negative light possible. Have you ever thought of being a strategist for your preferred candidate?

They made up their mind pretty quickly once that tape came out in 2010 and they pretty much decided to vote for Obama based on stuff that had happened back in February (and August with Akin), so they can't be that indecisive. Like them or not, they decide the balance in Colorado, in New Hampshire and in Virginia now, which means they hold the keys to the White House for a Republican.

You can win with a Pro-Life candidate in Colorado, but they cannot afford to be stupid anymore. Buck was stupid, you don't theorize an alternative explanation for a rape because you lack evidence, more or less do it over the phone. You apologize for not having the evidence and invite the person to sit down and discuss the details if want to do so and you have time, but you keep your mouth shut and remain sympathetic even while letting the evidence guide you. Everyone agreed he had made the right call legally speaking, his problem was his mouth, just like Akin, Mourdock and a number of others. This is a new reality that has to be accepted in the YouTube era.

Baumgardner is announcing Friday in Grand County. Any national headway he makes will be because of his trademark mustache. The only chance he could win a primary is if there's a lot of front range republicans to split the vote while he solidifies the rural hold. If we're going to lose to Udall, I think we should run him. It gives rural Coloradans a way to shout their opinions instead of secession.

Owen Hill announced for Senate!!! The only candidate who can lose and still have a good career after the race. He'll be an excellent candidate with military, small business, and charity background, a picture perfect family, and a very young face to bring youth to the republican party.

I'm actually pretty excited about Hill's candidacy.  I think that there is a general sense that Udall is by no means invulnerable.  The reality is that Colorado doesn't sway much, and neither party is going to net more than 53% of the vote in most elections.  You can put Elmer Fudd up and still climb into the 40s simply because of the size of the GOP base.

However, I do think that Hill can win if he is able to build a large enough cash kettle.  Udall circulated rumors last week that the Koch Bros. are especially looking to target Udall, which would obviously be bad thing for him and a good thing for Hill or whomever is the eventual GOP candidate.  Hill is young, well-spoken, and I think that he would not be an especially easy target in a typically rough Colorado GOP primary.  Other than his "yes" vote on ASSET, I don't know of any serious conservative weakness.  He's a definite social conservative (a must for any statewide GOP candidate), and his youth and relative blank slate allow him to follow Bill Owens' "kitchen table focus" route to victory.

And it looks like the secession talk has simmered down quite a lot, so hopefully those fine folks on the plains will focus on winning a GOP majority in the legislature and unseating Hickenlooper.  As it happens, I think that the governor's tremendous vulnerability may draw a lot of top-notch Republicans away from the Senate race.  I think that George Brauchler is pretty much a dream candidate, and I think the threat from him may be sufficiently strong to force Hickenlooper to consider stepping aside for a Salazar or Perlmutter to run instead.

I just don't feel like this is 2010 in Colorado again.  I love Ken Buck, but this doesn't yet feel like the 2010 primary.  If we have learned anything, it's that we need to head into next year more united, and I suspect that exactly that will probably happen.  This race probably still favors Udall, but it looks like it'll be a very good year for Republicans if we can avoid what has become a regular routine of excitement before crashing and burning.

DelGrosso won over Szabo for House Minority Leader after Waller resigned the leadership position to run for AG against Cynthia Coffman. He was considered the establishment and moderate pick over Szabo who's a conservative (although she's pretty much establishment herself)
