Debated in IRC.

Obviously Democrats though. I have no clue how it could be Republicans.

Yeah I would say that with Mormons in the GOP, you're going to have far less drinkers in that party than in the Democrats.

Mormon's shouldn't make a very significant factor in this, I don't think. I would still choose the Democrats to drink more. You find far more prudes in the Republican Party.

I'd venture so far as to say that this is probably one of the few things that's been consistently true of the Democratic Party over the centuries.

Democrats drink more on average, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Republicans had more people on each extreme.

That's the best answer.  Democrats are moderates in imbibing, just like in their politics.  Republicans are extremists - either teetotalling religious or binging frat boys.

Except for those uber wealthy Republicans you hate. A glass of wine with dinner and a fine scotch after is pretty normal for them.

I think the Pubs are very much in the running here, the LDS notwithstanding. If nothing else, the Dems have more women.

I think this is probably the correct answer.

What about the millions of fizzy, yellow, light beer guzzling NASCAR and football fans (I am admittedly a part of the latter)? I can assure you that Republicans consume just as much, if not more beer, than their Democratic counterparts. Democrats probably win on liquor and fruity mixed drinks, for what it's worth.

That's another fun thought. Who drinks more of certain drinks. First thoughts.

Scotch: Republicans
Bourbon: Republicans
Fine Wine: Democrats
Cosmos: Democrats
Mass produced beer: Republicans
Microbrews: Democrats
etc.

The thing about alcohol is that a large majority of it is consumed by a small percent that are hardecore alcoholics. The guy who has a couple of beers watching the game on sunday or the snooty couple enjoying a vintage cabernet with their chops don't even register on the scale. There are people who consume a liter of vodka every single day. And I have no idea about their politics but I suspect they don't care much. Like most people with substance issues, the addiction tends to overtake everything else in life.

Democrats have the bulk of the under-35 vote, which tends to drink more (it's pretty easy to go out for after-work drinks every day of the week when you don't have a spouse to go home to and/or kids to pick up from school). They also have the bulk of the Hispanic vote, and alcohol is ubiquitous at any Hispanic family dinner or casual get-together.

The only significant American demographic that abstains or generally avoids alcohol is evangelical Christians, who skew Republican. (Muslims don't drink either, but they make up less than 1% of the American population).

haha, yes I know, you just described me when I'm 'treating myself', though I'm generally slightly more fond of aperitifs than digestives.

Republicans win on Brandy consumption.  R leaning Wisconsin Germans account for 15% of the nation's consumption by themselves.

Democrats definitely drink better alcohol.

Republicans think it's gay to drink anything not advertised by NASCAR.

Yeah, drinking piss isn't something you should be proud of...

I like Yuengling the most when it comes to beer, but Natty light is the most common/cheapest thing here so most parties i go to stock up on it...

I'm surprised to see Yuengling so Republican (it's quite popular in liberal Philly), but I guess it must be even more popular in the T and the Appalachians, as CountryRoads aptly demonstrated upthread.

Also, apparently Sam Adams is so Republican because it's the only halfway-decent beer in a lot of rural Republican areas which don't stock microbrews.  Geography is likely the largest factor here, obviously, as CA beers (Sierra Nevada) are liberal while TX beers (Shiner) are conservative.  Some interesting demographics, too: my guess is that actual Hispanics drink Corona, whereas Corona Light is favored by frat bros instead, explaining the wide difference.

On behalf of liberals everywhere, I'm embarrassed about the Heineken.

Blue moon drinkers skew Republican? Who made this chart? I vehemently disagree with it.

It's been floating around the internet; I first saw it on another forum.

I think there was a National Journal article that brought it to folks' attention.
