What I don't get is how the state is called 'Rhode Island' when the vast majority of the state isn't actually an island.

Isn't the actual name Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.  Or is that when it was a colony?

Yes, that was the original name, it was shortened in later years.

It's still called Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Just look at their Constitution.

Then why does he keep sailing to reelection?

Because he has a "D" next to his name

Rhode Island was one of the 13 founding states of the Union and should Puerto Rico attain statehood, it should not be merged with Connecticut

Merge the Virginia's, they were originally one state

I have a very positive opinion of Rhode Island

IIRC Rhode Island and Providence Plantations is still the official name.
I never was able to figure out whether this is supposed to mean Rhode Island Plantation and Providence Plantation or Providence Plantations and Rhode Island.
Anyways, while it was founded by religious/political refugees from Massachusetts, the name's got nothing to with that. Block Island was named Rhodes Island by - now, was it Giovanni Verazzano or Sebastian Cabot? - because apparently it looks a lot like the Greek Island of Rhodes. The Puritan colonists, almost a hundred years on, misinterpreted his map in applying the name to the current island of Rhode Island. They also misinterpreted the meaning of the name, thence the spellings Rhode's Island or Rhode Island.

For Republicans, all of the above.
